Memphis in August

So we (2 adults) are going to venture to Memphis from Nashville, probably 8/16-8/18. Would like to visit Graceland and probably Beale St. This is our first time in Tennessee and Memphis, recognizing that mid August is a busy time for Elvis fans, how busy does it actually get? Any recommendations/advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

In short, its extremely busy. I highly suggest you book your Graceland tour in advance during Elvis week. That said, I understand that Elvis week ends on the 17th and that the crowds quickly dissipate on the 18th. Have you checked to see if you can get a decent hotel at a decent rate?

I have not...was thinking possible staying on the outskirts of Memphis to save $. So I guess I should check on the Graceland Reservations before I do anything else, beings that's our main point of our visit.( I did not realize that there was a limit on tickets, which I guess is a good thing!) Thank you for such a quick reply Deb. I have read some of your other posts and appreciate the Memphis info you have shared.

You're so welcome.

Graceland tickets are sold for specific tour times and when a slot fills, that's it.

As for lodging, staying downtown allows you to have an adult beverage on Beale without having to worry about driving. However, it is more expensive. The least expensive lodging downtown would be the Vista Inn, which is basic lodging. The next least expensive would be Sleep Inn, Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn, Double Tree and sometimes the Marriott and Crowne Plaza. Saving money by staying in West Memphis, AR puts you minutes from downtown. Staying in north MS around I 55/Goodman Rd. puts you close to Graceland, but in a nicer, safer area. One of the cheapest places to stay would be Tunica, MS at one of the casinos. Tunica is about an hour from downtown Memphis and less than that from Graceland.

Glad you got your tickets. That's a very nice area and puts you about 20 - 25 minutes from from either Graceland or Beale.
