Buses from Porthmadog to Portmerion

Hi. I have booked a holiday to North Wales for next summer. We have train station in nearby Caernafon which takes us to Porthmadog. As this is very near Portmerion we have decided to visit on the same day we take the train ride to save travelling again by car. Is there a frequent bus service which goes from Porthmadog to Portmerion or would we need to get off in Minffordd and walk the mile or so to the village?

Thank you for any assistance...

The timetables for next summer won't be out until Spring

From what I recall there is a local bus service but it's very infrequent - you are likely to end up walking at least one way.from the main road

First--There are direct buses from Caernarfon to portmeirion via porthmadog as also there are from porthmadog to port meirion.

secondly-Minfordd train stn is not on the same private railway as the Caernarfon to portmadog one.so you would need to change in porthmadog.[times might not match]

thirdly--Both train tracks are quite expensive so why go both ways on train,Caernarfon to porthmadog.

Suggest-Train, One way,Caernarfon to porthmadog. Then bus to Portmeirion. At the end of the day, then Bus direct portmeirion to Caernarfon. Check out a bus day rover ticket to cover all your bus journeys. Its only£7.

There are no trains to Porthmadog at the moment as a part of the track is being worked on until 2015.

Portmeirion is in a village called Minffordd which quite a few buses go through. You can walk from the village in about 15 minutes and it is well signposted. Ask the driver to tell you when you get to Minffordd.

Otherwise you can get a taxi for a reasonable price - try Dukes 01766 514 799.

The train from Caernafon to Porthmadog takes over 2 hours. The first train reaches Porthmadog at 12.10pm. The last train leaves at 2.15pm on quiet days, and on peak days at 4pm.

So you won't have much time to enjoy the beautiful village of Portmerion.

Fares are costly as it's a narrow gauge steam train, the return trip will cost £34, and a single £22.70 if you prefer to return by bus. Provided there's a suitable bus (and I don't know the timetable) that would allow you more time at your destination.

Personally, i'd drive to Portmerion one day, and take the train another day, spending my time waiting for the return train around Porthmadog, which has a pretty harbour.

Thanks everyone. We are staying in Waunfawr, so are near a Welsh Highland Railway Station. We like a train ride so will probably have a go, but will probably go to Portmerion another day by car. Thanks for all the feedback.

This page has directions and links to timetables etc for getting there. http://www.portmeirion-village.com/en/visit/

Or if you email a couple of taxi companies in advance and tell them when you want to go, you might be able to get a cheap lift arranged.

This is the bus time table

www.gwynedd.gov.uk/gwy_amserlen_bws.asp…

Nearer the time there is a government run travel site : Travelinecymru that will help you check and link up all your routes via bus and train.
