Lots of shops in Barry. Even more 20 minutes away on the train in Cardiff.

Nightlife is OK (not as bad as it is portrayed in Gavin & Stacey) but you will mainly be confined to nice pubs. Penarth has some nicer places that are open until late. After that you will need to go to Cardiff for late nights.

I suppose it depends on what kind of 'nightlife' you are looking for.

According to my Good Beer Guide from 2010 there are three pubs in Barry that serve good beer (which usually means that they are nice pubs too):

Barry West End Club, 54 St. Nicholas Road.

Castle Hotel, 44 Jewel Street.

Sir Samuel Romilly, 4-6 Romilly Buildings, Market Street.

There is a selection of eateries and pubs on Broad Street ( turn right as you come out of Barry train station ) and High Street ( next street up that runs parallel to Broad Street ). Most of the shops are on Holton Road and there are more pubs and eateries there.
