20 year anniversary to Melbourne and Sydney Australia in Dec

Planning a trip to Melbourne ( a bit of work with a conference from Dec 3-6) then was thinking of heading to Sydney and possible to the Great Barrier Reef. I am thinking total of 14 days. Leaving us on the 29th and leaving Australia on the 12 or 13th. Can anyone give an idea on what kind of budget for nice trip like this would cost? And if we have enough time to do the three locations?

Yes, you have time to do the three locations.

Asking for a budget is a 'how long is a piece of string' question. It depends entirely on the standards of food, travel and accommodation you are looking for. Hostel? Five star hotel? Top restaurants? DIY meals in a serviced apartment?

In your planning there are a few things you should consider:

1. It's the wet season in the Cairns region. That means heavy rain, high temperatures, high humidity and the possibility of cyclones. It's also marine stinger season which means you need to either swim only in pools or on netted beaches or wear a stinger suit.

2. From mid December, it's school summer holiday time which means airfares and accommodation get more expensive and many accommodation places in the more popular areas require minimum stays.

3.Most importantly, if you are planning on being in Sydney over New Years, be prepared for a shock when you start to look for accommodation. Most of the good and reasonably priced rooms have already been sold. What is left will be eye wateringly expensive and usually come with a minimum 3 night stay. Unless you are desperate to be in Sydney that night, I suggest you plan on being elsewhere.

4. Just a thought - since you are already in Melbourne, if you do have second thoughts about the Great Barrier reef, consider Tasmania. It's perfect at that time of the year and a wonderful place to visit. Another place you might investigate is Kangaroo Island.
