nashville live music scene

Hi,

We are trying to find out a bit about Nashville. We are wondering in particular about the live music there. I may be wrong but it looks like the honky tonks and that strip along Broadway is really touristy and we are wondering whether there is much really interesting music that is not geared towards the tourists. WHere do the locals go to listen to bands? We would like to find some authentic blues, bluegrass, alternative folk, rock and country music and not sure whether Nashville is the place to go. Also, we looked on google maps around the Hermitage Hotel and there doesn't seem to be any restaurants, shops or cafes within the immediate vicinity of this hotel - we want to stay somewhere located in an area where you can walk out and find interesting bars and places to eat etc. Any feedback would be appreciated, many thanks.

There is oodles and oodles of live music of all types throughout Nashville. It is a music-centric city, not just the home of the country music industrial machine.

The Hermitage Hotel is a hop and a skip to tons of "interesting" spots. It's true that the Broadway / 2nd Ave strip, and nearby Printer's Alley, are touristy, but don't discount it. The musicians you'll hear in the honky-tonks are better than average, and that scene can be really fun.

There is not going to be any hotel that's smack dab in the middle of a packed "interesting" bar/restaurant/club scene. American cities aren't built like that for the most part. Things are scattered, there are great spots all over town. So The Hermitage Hotel is a great place to stay, close to the strip, and not too far from interesting neighborhoods like 12South, The Gulch, East Nashville (5 Points plus other pockets like Eastland/Chapel), Hillsboro Village, midtown, etc. etc.

For complete listings, go to nashvillescene.com/nashville/…Page and click the "Music" tab under the Calendars heading. A few venues of note would be Station Inn, Bluegrass Inn, Bluebird Cafe, 3rd and Lindsley, Basement, Cannery Ballroom, Douglas Corner, Listening Room, Mercy Lounge, Family Wash, and others. If you are going to be here mid-week and will have a car, be sure to check out the Wednesday live radio show performance Music City Roots at The Loveless Barn.

I heard there is a pretty big alternative music scene there too. Can you recommend any spots? Thanks!

I'd be interested in any bars that play bluegrass.

I heartily second the recommendation about Music City Roots. We just returned from Nashville and saw a great show there...and its only $10! Usually a good variety of artists. Get there a bit early, have a great meal in the Loveless Cafe then walk 20 yards and see a great show at the Loveless Barn.

Also the Bluebird Cafe...you won't get more authentic. We went twice in 5 days! Can be hard to get into though but is another great evening, and not expensive.

Finally, some places along Broadway have "genuine" acts. Try to find out the schedules in advance. If they are not online, they are sometimes posted in the windows of the bars. We spent a great afternoon in Roberts Western World watching Eileen Rose and the Silver Threads. The danger is there is just so much to see in that area you could miss a great act due to sheer volume of places to go and artists to see.

Newcastle...

TFerrrell's link to the Scene is a greta resource. Station Inn, Bluegrass Inn & the Loveless barn (Wed. nights) are all great for blurgrass, but many others will have it too.

You might also want to check the web sites for the Ryman Auditorium, for the money, the best place to see a show at a showplace and for a bit more off the beaten path, you can catch some very unusual shows at Third Man Records (owned and operated by Jack White) on 7th Ave.
