road trip from New Orleans to Charleston SC

Have been reading lots of the forums as per our intending trip and would like a little help and advice. We are planning to leave UK about the 20th April 2013 and an end date depends on how long it takes to complete the journey - having seen as much as possible along the way.We are 4 senior (fit) people and interested in most things.

Thoughts at the moment:

4 nights New Orleans

2 nights Natchez

1 night Vicksburg

2 or 3 nights Nashville

2 or 3 nights Chattanooga

now we are uncertain which direction to go. We have visited Ashville on two occasions before. We also wondered whether to fly home from Charleston or drive back to New Orleans.

Any advice would be very helpful

Charleston for sure. Lovely city, great time of year to visit the south. About a 6 hour drive from Chattanooga. Flighs from Charleston may route you through Altanta, or you could drive to ATL in 5 hours (maybe add a day or 2 there).

Another route would be to leave Nashville and go to Asheville, NC. Visit the Biltmore Mansion, enjoy the mountains and then continue on to Charleston (4 hour drive).

Thank you, we have visited Biltmore twice and stayed in Asheville so really wanted to know if there were other places from Chattanooga to Charleston. Have also been looking at the map and thinking about driving to Savannah and then doing the coast road to Jackonsville, then on to New Orleans on route 98, having several stops along the way. We can surrender the car and fly out of New Orleans. It would be about a months trip, might as well make the most of the long flight!!!

Sounds like a great trip.

Lots of people choose between Savannah and Charleston and only go with one. If this was your plan, I would recommend Charleston. But truly, they are both woth visiting. I often describe Savannah as "Charleston with a dash of New Orleans thrown in". I don't think that 2 or 3 days in each would feel repetitive to you. You could work in a little beach/golf time, as there are several resorts along the coast (an on to Jacksonville as well).

I'm assuming you've done Memphis before as well since you didn't mention it. If not I would take a potential day from Natchez or another city or add one or two to the trip and stop there. Late April should be good Spring weather to visit the highly rated zoo w/ Giant Pandas, Downtown Carriage rides and tours guided by live RocknRoll singers.

Other stops along the way might be the historic town of Franklin, south of Nashville, and the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg, TN.

At the end it would be simple to fly out of Atlanta which is a short drive from Chattanooga.

If you are going to be on the coast, the Georgia coast is worth visiting -- Jekyll Island is beautiful and historic, plus others like St. Simons, etc.

Have just about agreed our route but now working out how many days in each place - at the moment it comes to about 32 days - hope our friends are ready for a very interesting holiday.

Townsend seems to be a good place to stay in the Smokey Mountains - 2 days and then staying overnight in Greenwood before making our way to Charleston.

I will post the final details eventually. It will then be about booking accom: and making a list of recommended eating establishments.

We like family places - not large chain hotels.

Thanks for your recommendations.
