Girls' Weekend in early May

I'll be coming to Nashville from May 2 thru May 5 with a group of 5, staying at the Indigo Hotel. We will NOT have a car. Is this a good location for checking out the downtown area (walking) or should we consider another hotel? We're interested in hearing live music, visiting your Honky-tonks we've heard so much about, and all things "Nashville". That being said, none of us are true Country Music afficionadoes. Thus far, we've only made one reservation, and thats for the Grand Old Opry Saturday night performance on May 4. Can you recommend "must-see" things/places during the day? So far we have The Frist Center, Rymer Gallery, Fontanel, Country Music Hall of Fame, Music Row/Studio B, and the Farmers' Market on our list. We've been told to check out the Bluebird Cafe, Tootsies, Wild Horse Saloon and the Catbird Seat...what do you think?

Which Hotel Indigo? There are two. The one downtown (as opposed to the one on West End) is fine for no-car activities.

Skip Fontanel. First, it's on the outskirts of town. Second, it's not a key activity.

Even if you are not a country fan, the honky-tonks are fun.

Rymer Gallery is good, but there are also tons of galleries along 5th Ave N. In fact, on the First Saturday of every month there is an art crawl -- since you'll be here on a crawl weekend, I'd recommend it. nashvilledowntown.com/play/first-saturday-ar…

Yes to CM Hall of Fame, Farmer's Market (on Sat or Sun is best), Frist, Bluebird (tiny venue, book tickets in advance). Tootsies and Wild Horse are part of a huge number of honkey-tonks on Lower Broad. Wander in and out of all of them at will -- Robert's is also a good choice. Studio B is fine if you have time.

Yes to Catbird Seat, in spades, if you like adventurous, quality dining with a chef's tasting menu (as good as, and cheaper than, anything you can get in NY). Be sure and go to the web site and read about making reservations, you'll have to stay up to midnight a month before to snag one.

Also recommended: City House, Lockeland Table, Rolf & Daughters, etch, Flyte.

Many thanks, TFerrell, for your advice. We're booked at the Downtown Indigo, so I guess we're good to go. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. Safe travels!

Downtown Hotel Indigo is a great place. Walking distance to lots of fun places, restaurants. The honky tonks on Lower Broad are a great time. Check out The Stage & Tootsies. Also the Gulch is a very short cab ride and lots of neat bars, restaurants in that area as well! You'll have a great time!

The Opry on Saturday night is a good choice, but I would change to Opry Country Classics on Thursday night at the Ryman instead. The Ryman Auditorium is a much better venue for watching a show and the folks at the Opry are usually pretty good about letting you change dates, just call 1-800-SEE-OPRY. Since you're already going to be downtown, you'll be 4 blocks away from the Ryman at the Hotel Indigo.
