Nashville and surrounding area

Hi we are planning a week or 9 day trip to Nashville and surrounding Area from the UK in October. Can anyone please let me know any ideas on a fly drive itinary or would a week in Nashville be good? Not sure where we would fly into yet - either Memphis or Atalanta.

Any help gratefully received!

If you are comfortable renting and driving a car, both Memphis and Atlanta are a fairly easy and straight drive from Nashville.

I suppose you should look into each of these cities and decide what specific sites you would like to see and things you would like to do in each one. That will help you determine how much time you should spend in each city or if you want to condense your time to one or two. You could easily fill a one week itinerary sticking to Nashville and Middle TN, but you could also get a great overview of the Nashville in 3-4 days - it all depends on your personal interests!

the drive from Atlanta to Nashville is scenic, with some interesting stops along the way if you care to stop. The drive from Memphis to Nashville is not ugly, but boring, and there's nothing much of interest in between. the downside of flying into Atlanta and driving to Nashville is that you have to go through Atlanta, as the airport is on the south side of the city. It's fine, although you will hear horror stories about Atlanta traffic. You just have to be careful not to be driving during weekday rush hours.

you'll be driving through the mountains. Chattanooga would be a lovely spot for an overnight. Stay downtown, near the river. There's a lovely Bed and Breakfast called the Stone Fort Inn if you're in the mood to splurge. If you want something more rustic, look at Sewanee / Monteagle mountain. you can get more tips by posting on the forums for those particular towns.

If you ask your question on the Road trip forum - or even search the Road Trip forum you will find loads of suggestions. We are doing part of this trip and have had lots of advice over there!!

We found flights to Atlanta much cheaper than most other places around so hope your trip goes well

If you are driving from Atlanta you might want to drive up to Gatlinburg. So much to see and do!

I think you'll need to narrow down your itinerary as to what you want to do to maximize your time sightseeing and not spending lots of your time driving in the car.. While the suggestion of Gatlinburg is good, you're looking at around a 4-hour drive between there and Nashville. October will be peak foliage season in the Gatlinburg/Great Smokey Mtn. National Park area, so if you are thinking of doing that, I'd suggest looking into hotel reservations ASAP.
