It's me again - also forgot to ask the best place to book a hotel in Nashville and Memphis as I have no idea of where we need to be based for our trip.

Was thinking of hiring a car for the 2 weeks - is this necessary or are all places of interest centrally located. Is it a good idea to hire a car for 1 week/ a few days or for the whole 2 weeks.

Thanks for help!!

I don't have any recommendations for Nashville or Memphis.

However, you will definitely need to rent a car on your visit. In the U.S., public transportation is not very prominent, except in the largest of cities. Vehicles are the major source of transport and you will need one to get to the destinations you want to see.

Depending on how much you want to spend, Nashville has the Opryland Hotel. This is very expensive. The cheapest rooms they have are around $200 per night. Check out their website at www.oprylandhotel.com. Ther is also the Marriott Hotel close to the airport that is very nice. Memphis has the Peabody Hotel. Again, this is the most expensive hotel in Memphis. Both of these cities have all the usual chain hotels. Hope you have a good time.

Suggest you go to the forums for Memphis and Nashville to get specific information about those cities. You will have to rent a car for transportation. To give you an idea of the size of Tennessee, it is 200 miles (322 kilometers) between Memphis and Nashville and about 440 miles (710 kilometers) from west to east. If you run out of things to do in Memphis and Nashville plan to visit the Great Smoky Mountain National Park area in east Tennessee.

Reading all the replies there sounds like an awful lot to do and see. On previous trips we have booked our first few nights in a hotel and then travelled round getting others as we go. Is this possible or will we pay a lot more money for hotel rooms by just arriving on doorstep?

Can anyone help with this question?
