Hi coming down July 23-30th. Is it usually steamy hot? How about crowds? Thanks.

There will be crowds, and it will be steamy hot in the lower elevations. A bit more comfortable in the National Park under the forest canopy and at higher altitudes.

July is the highest overall visitation month of the entire year, followed by October.

Yes, it will be crowded and traffic will be heavy, but nothing like car show weekends. Yes, it will be very hot and humid and water will be very inviting, whether it's a pool or mountain river/stream. You're likely to experience a few afternoon thunderstorms, so just be prepared.

If you want to escape the heat, go up high in elevation. Take a hike along the A.T. from Newfound Gap, or up to Clingmans Dome, or out to Andrews Bald to escape the heat and humidity.

If you want to visit Cades Cove, but avoid the traffic jams, get up very early in the morning and go on any day except Wednesday or Saturday (they don't open the road to vehicles until 10:00 AM those days).

We are visiting early to mid June. How are he crowds and in particular the traffic. we have been before but that was in september and while I had nothing to compare to I think it was reasonably quiet . The weather I'm not bothered about, Come from Scotland and we are still getting minus temps at the moment so any improvement will be a bonus, Official British summertime started at the weekend and it was -4 driving home from work yesterday morning.

June is the beginning of family vacation season and one of the 3 most visited months to the GSMNP - (July, June and October). If you were here in September, imagine about 30% more than the traffic then. Weather averages in June are very similar to September with cooler mornings in the 50's up to 80's in the afternoon. If you will be visiting the Park, getting an early start to your day will put you ahead of a lot of the crowds.
