Recommendations on Places to Stop on the Way to Pigeon Forge

We will be driving to Pigeon Forge from Elkin, NC. According to Google, it is approximately a little less than a four hour drive. I have two children 8 and 10 and want to know if there is any place that would be interesting to stop and eat or visit. Any ideas would be great! Thanks!

Do you have a route you plan to take in mind? One option will take you thru Boone / Blowing Rock which has good restaurants and little shops (downtown Blowing Rock). If you are really hungry try Daniel Boones which serves family style food and is very good.

Another option would be to take the longer scenic route thru Ashville, Maggie Valley, Cherokee and up thru the Smoky Mountains National Park. Beautiful drive but will probably be much longer than the northern route up to 81 and thru Bristol, tn area.

If you take the I40 route, you could 'detour' north for

Gem mining in the Spruce Pine area - restaurants in the area

Mt Mitchell State Park (can have a picnic or eat at the restaurant)

For either of the detours, you could come back to I40 to head west or travel on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Asheville.

Other options - get on the BRP in Asheville and check out Mt Pisgah, Graveyard Fields (waterfall that is a short hike and has a swimming hole), Richland Balsam (nature trail that our granddaughters liked when they were the ages of your two children).

If you come the I81 route, you could stop at Hungry Mother State Park (north of Marion) - picnic area and swimming there. Another longer stop could be heading to Damascus for a bike ride on the Virginia Creeper Trail (you rent bikes, they shuttle you to Whitetop and you bike downhill back to Damascus - lovely).

All of your options have great stops. Enjoy your trip!

If you take the BRP from Ashville to Cherokee stop at Mt. Pisgah Inn for lunch, excellent food and a great view. Graveyard Fields is a great waterfall hike and easy to do as its mostly steps not a dirt trail.
