We went to the mountains for a short trip last week and had a great time. Leaves weren't quite as pretty as I would have liked for them to be and the Nationaal Park was only opened the last day we were there but still found plenty of fun things to do. Mon. - Left Middle Tn. about 4am so my dh could get to The Old Mill in time for breakfast. He loves there stone ground grits and no matter how many times a year we go that is his first stop. Breakfast was great as usual. Spent the day shopping, the outlets were packed as most stores were having big Columbus day sales but got a few good bargains.Took the Gatlinburg bypass up to our hotel Leconte View, we have stayed there every year for the last 20 and have always found it to be clean and staff friendly plus it is across from the convention center which makkes it convienant for Gatlinburg shopping. Had tickets that night for The Hatfields and Mccoys show, we enjoyed it , and food was good. Something to consider if you are thinking of going give yourself plenty of time before the show to eat. When the show starts they make the waiters get off the floor, our row had some latecomers which put our waiter behind on serving food and another waiter had to come help him and they barely got the desserts out before the show.Another thing to consider is seating. They have regular tables and chairs with arms that were very comfortable and also have high, barstool type tables and the chairs don't have arms. For a young couple the higher chairs would probably be fine but there was an older couple sitting behind us and they said they were very uncomfortable to them, in fact they stood up during most of the show because the lady was short and her feet would not reach the footrail and she had no armrest to help her out.
Tues.-Got up early and headed over the mountain to Cherokee. Would have loved to have been able to stop by Clingmon's Dome and some other stops we usually make but thanks to the gov. not this trip. Stoped in Cherokee at Peter's Pancake House and had some of the best biscuits I have ever eaten. I got the ham and egg biscuit and dh got the biscuits and gravy with eggs and all was delicious! Very reasonable he also had coffee and our total bil was just over $13.00 Had a nice drive over the BlueRidge Parkway and on the way back to Gatlinburg stopped at the Newfoundland Gap pulloff and the view was beautiful! Went back to Gatlinburg strolled the strip some and stopped at the Smokey Mt. distillery and had some free kettle corn they were making and listened to some good music. They are also building a couple of more distilleries on the parkway, glad to see them cleaning the town up and it becoming more than tee shirt and pocket book shops. That evening we went to try out The Blue Moose in Pigeon Forge and had a delicious burger and fries. The people next to us had salad and wings and they said theirs was good also. Went to the Smoky Mt. OPry and saw a great show. Good music, unbelieveable juggling and magic acts it is now one of my favorite shows and we will be returning. Wed. morning got up and had the breakfas bart at the Shoney's in Gatlinburg and it was very good, clean and friendly. After a little more leaf looking and shopping we headed back to home. Can't wait until we can get back up there for a few days!
