Things to Not Miss

Can anyone give me any ideas of things to check out while in the Townsend area?

Hey it's me again....saw this post. Townend is not a big place. Nothing compared to PF or Gat. There are some shops around. Apple Valley is nice. Be sure and drive on The Foothills Parkway....awesome views. At the end you'll reach Chilhowee Lake. Townsend is just a quiet location. Good place to bike ride and walk on the trail thru town.

We enjoy that bike/walking trail too. Just very relaxing.

The new Smoky Mountain Heritage Center is now open in Townsend. Haven't been there but you can read about at the following website. Scroll down the page for the description.

The great website to check out what Townsend has is

discovertownsend.com/_virtual/townsend_tn_vi…

That site will show you where and what everything is on the parkway. It starts on the park side of town and ends past the Foothills Parkway.

Tubing is a favorite activity in Townsend during the summer months. There are places that have a shuttle along with the tube rental. This is one of our favorite things to do - although we haven't done it in Townsend.

And of course, definitely check out the National Park. You are close to Cades Cove from Townsend, so get up early, beat the crowds and maybe you will see some wildlife. Just keep in mind that the Cove Rd. is closed to cars every Sat and Wed mornings until 10am, allowing for bicycle traffic only.

I hope you have a fantastic time!

Just returned to our home in England after spending 2 weeks in

a log cabin in Townsend. This is our third visit in 5 years, and it

is well worth the thousand of miles travelled to get there. The

Heritage Centre in Townsend is well worth a visit, it has a very

good museum with exhibits of early transportation in the local area, history of the early Native American Indians, and also old log cabins that you can go in and details of who lived in them etc.

Also Cades Cove is a MUST see. It is an 11 mile loop drive that

has breathtaking scenery, old log cabins, churches etc and the best thing of all the wild life, we were so lucky to see a black bear

(mother)and her 2 cubs by the road side. Tuckaleechee Caverns

also another good thing to do.

I would also like to cast a vote for Tuckaleechee Caverns! We went here a few weeks ago after going through Cades Cove. We thought it was a beautiful cave. The "big room" is the size of four football fields and has fantastic formations. At the end of the tour is a waterfall and "beach" area. You can actually drink the water; it's that pure! The guide was great; he was very laid back and even let visitors touch some of the formations, which we found to be unusual for most cave tours.

As others have said, there are plenty of tubing places, and of course the main attraction is Cades Cove! We were also lucky enough to see a momma black bear and her two cubs.

Townsend is small; you can follow signs to most the main attractions. Enjoy!
