Visiting Easter 2009

Visiting Texas next year. Thought 3 nights in Dallas would be ok. Do we need a car in the city or would it be better to hire one for the next leg of the journey to San Antonio? By the way thinking of finishing the trip with a few days chilling at Galveston Island. Is it ok there? Seem to be a lot of hotels. Were thinking of Corpus Christi but looks a bit desolate on web sites. We have a 17 year old son so need to have something to do ie crazy golf etc

Depending on where you stay while in Dallas and on what days you are travelling you could do fine without a car in the city.

Galveston is a lovely island and would be fun to visit. There is a miniature golf place on the Island.

Corpus Christi is not desolate, and a lot of people like it quite well.

I would choose Galveston over Corpus Christi. If you go to Galveston go to Gaido's (an old family favorite for many, including us) and have mahi mahi, I think it's called Rick's Special.

If you haven't rented a car while touring Texas you are definitely handicapped. Texas worships at the alter of personal transportation. EVERTHING is geared toward it. One CAN get around without a car. But WHY? We have great roads and things tend to be spread out in Texas.

If it's a choice between Corpus and Galveston. DEFINITELY Galveston is the more entertaining to do. Strolling the sea wall and the Strand are definite must dos in Galveston. Visiting Moody Gardens and seeing the aquarium would be worth your time as well. Great sea food everywhere. If you have time I'd take time to see the NASA museum and the Kemah Boardwalk as well.

I would recommend a car for Dallas. Galveston is a fun town with a wide variety of activities. Not the world's most beautiful beach but OK. Corpus Christi is mainland town; it has a nice bayfront area but for the true beach you have to go out to a barrier island like Aransas Pass. Either city will provide excellent seafood.

You have picked a good time of year to visit Texas. The weather will likely be fine and the wildflowers should be abundant. Be aware, however, that Texas can get very violent thunderstorms and tornados during this time of year and they can arise rather suddenly. It's a good idea to keep an eye on the sky.
