Vacation in Galveston

Will be vacationing in Galveston the week of July 15th. Not familiar with the area AT ALL, but am very excited about it as we will be doing the beach thing and relaxing all week. Just wondering what else to do if I get bored with the beach (which is highly possible). I know that Galveston has a lot to offer, but do not know any specifics. Any one that can fill me in on good restaurants, museums, etc? Thanks in advance for your help.

galveston.com has all the info you need. If you run out of things to do, Houston is less than an hour away.

The beach isn't nearly as nice as what you are probably used to -- being in Mississippi you have probably spent time in Gulf Shores, AL just due to the proximity, so please don't expect that. It is more of a murky brown water with a mud-like sand. It isn't that is it dirty or polluted (well maybe some...) but it due to the flow of the gulf currents and the sediments that get carried our way from the Mississippi River. You'll have fun in Galveston - lots of historic sites, Moody Gardens, Schlitterbahn waterpark, ghost tours, artwalks, etc.

As the previous poster stated, the water is not like Gulf Shores but on a sunny, clear day, it can run a close 2nd to say..Biloxi maybe.

There is a lot to do on Galveston. The Strand in the historic district, the Harbor, fishing on the 61st Street Fishing Pier, Schlitterbahn Water park, Moody Gardens (they also have a very small man-made beach/pool which is really neat, it is called Palm Beach), historic homes you can tour, such as the Bishop's Palace or Moody Mansion. There is a railroad museum and a county historical museum (highly reccommend). You can go down to the harbor and see the shrimp boats and cruise ships, eat some delicious seafood at Fisherman's Wharf and go see the film on the Storm of 1900. :-) Or have some GREAT mexican food at the Original Mexican Cafe at 14th and Market Street.

Have fun!

Check out Gina's Italian food. Nothing fancy but food pretty good and prices are decent.

The Duck Tour is kind of different. Vehicle that goes from land to water. http://www.galveston.com/ducktours/

Trolley around town is inexpensive and great way to see city. You can get off/on at several locations. So you can get off and shop then get back on later in day.

Nasa is about 30 minutes away. Kemah Boardwalk is nice in the evenings. Great places to eat and normally they have some type of music on weekends.
