How about going down to Kemah? You can eat along the water, and there's a boardwalk with rides; NASA Johnson Space Center isn't too far away if that would interest them. Or they could head to the Galleria for shopping, eating at the Cheesecake Factory, and ice skating. The zoo and museums are another good option. And there's always Galveston.

How about a combination of Space Center Houston in the AM and the Kemah Boardwalk in the mid PM or evening?

A lot of things to do in Houston. Coming from Iowa - 'water' / beach might be a good idea - so Kemah if you want to be by water or Galveston if you actually want to tip your toes in the water (gulf). NASA is always a good choice if you are into space stuff (but tickets are not cheap). So maybe NASA, Kemah, Galveston (Moody Garden) - all in the general vicinity.

I would say Galveston during the day and Kemah eve / night. The previous post sorta has the same suggestion - so must be the thing to do :)
