Galveston Island is the closest to Houston. Lots of variety for all ages, accomodations, attractions etc. www.galveston.com for more info.

Welcome to Houston!!

Word of warning...the northern Texas coast tends toward lots of seaweed, and the water is brown with sand particles. You really have to go south of Corpus Christi to find the nicer Texas beaches. The seaweed is hit and miss, so you may get lucky.

We have Galveston.

The water isn't blue, lots of seaweed, BUT, it is never without people. lol

I live about 20 minutes from Galveston and I go when ever I can. It is nice, windy and enjoyable. Long stretch of sand with lots of food places to enjoy.

Go to THE SPOT for the best burgers ever. There you can sit outside and watch the water...really cool at night.

The Strand is open with shops.

Come and enjoy

I agree with Westchase. Galveston beaches are not attractive, and the water is brown and dirty. Go to Corpus Christi (2 hour drive) or South Padre (4 hour drive).

You have several options - depends on what exactly you want and like plus how far from Houston and how many in the party.

My three options would be to take a cruise out from Galveston and then you can have some really really nice beaches. There are so many good deals on the cruises that it will be a lot cheaper than you think. The negative is that July is hurricane season :(

The other is Port A, South Padre or Corpus (I like Port A the best).

Third would be Galveston

It is relatively inexpensive to rent a beach house in either Galveston or Surfside. A week in your own beach cottage might be nice. Surfside is less expensive but Galveston has more activities in addition to the beach such as Moody Gardens, The Strand, Lone Star Flight Museum (www.lsfm.org), and historic home tours.

The water is somewhat murky because of the sediment from our many rivers, including the Mississippi River but the beaches can be very nice and there is always a breeze.

Hope you have a wonderful visit!

The poster asked for "holiday resort" which implies pools and tennis courts etc. Any recommendations for those at or near Galveston?

There are tons of resorts on Galveston Island and nearby. In addition to the San Luis and the Hotel Galvez, which are both lovely there are quite a few all suite and condo resorts right near the beach.

Here are a couple of websites that offer lodging information:

We like the San Luis. We enjoy Galveston for the Strand, the great historic buildings like Bishop's Palace, etc., good restaurants, Moody Gardens - there's a lot to do there. True the water can look brown due to sediment, but It's still a fun place to go. We've done art walks down there, gone to the theater. It has lots of options. The HIlton is a nice hotel as well. Or you could stay at Moody Gardens, but it's away from the beach. Some restaurants we like: Mosquito Cafe, Saltwater Grill, The Spot. If you enjoy water parks, the Schlitterbahn is there as well. La King's is a fun old-fashioned soda fountain where they make candy, serve ice cream, etc.

Hi Mar,

Maybe this will help you find a great beach house in Galveston:

It's fun to stay on or near the beach, cook out on the patio, swim, and go into town for the restaurants., Moody Gardens, Schlitterbahn water park, and the Strand District!

Hope you enjoy!
