Shell Houston Open March 29, 2013

I'm visiting Houston with family for 3 days. Would like some advice about attending the Houston Open outside of Houston with 5 men ages 23-59 on Friday morning to midafternoon. Is it easy to view the golfers? Do they draw any big name golfers? Any tips on parking, food, tickets or best viewing spots would be greatly appreciated.

Very easy to view the golfers, and Redstone is a great course for players and spectators alike. Unless you have a parking pass, you park at the ecolot at IAH (George Bush Intercontinental Airport) and take a shuttle to and from the course. Costs $5/per person round trip; they run frequently. There will be lots of signs around the airport directing you to the lot.

Usually attracts a great field, as it is for many a tune up for the Masters. Currently 4 or 5 of the world's top ten have committed, including Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, VJ Singh, Brent Snedeker, Hunter Mahan, etc. Google the website for more info as the date approaches, and more players commit.

You can buy tickets at the gate, or usually Shell gas stations sell them. Wide variety of food all along the course. Excellent viewing at all holes. Like most tournaments if you want a grandstand seat they are available; not usually a problem unless you are following a big name and arrive with that group.

No spikes allowed; not sure about cameras on the Friday. That's when we're going; hoping the weather is good.

Thank you for the fantastic review. It is just what these visitors needed. Looks like the ladies will be busy at one of your fine museums and we will save the Segway tour with the group for Saturday! Very much appreciated.

Hi,

Lots of great golfers; we have some of the game's best at SHO! First, go EARLY...when the gates open, you want to be there. If the day is going to get very warm (TX days can start cool, then warm up quickly), you will get the best weather in the morning. The golfers are staggered with different tee (start) times, so you might look up on their wesbite, to see when your favorite players begin their day. If you can go on Thursday, that's the "quiet day", and attendance is not as high, so getting there, parking, etc is better...but fewer golfers to see, as well.

You might want to ride a shuttle bus in. If you do come to park, again, the earlier, the better. Wear very comfortable shoes, it's a long walk..everywhere. But good exercise.

this shows shuttle info, and more:

Remember not to try to park in the Fall Creek neighborhoods, and then walk to the venue. The HCSO (sheriff's dept) patrols for people parking randomly, and they do tow 'unauthorized' vehicles.

Bring one of those stick/stand chairs, that are easy to carry. There are bleachers, but not at every hole. Sun lotion is a good idea, too. There is now cell phone use allowed in certain areas, but make sure your 'noises' are off,as requested.

Let's pray for good weather!

Thanks for the great info. It's all incredibly helpful. Most of our group is arriving on Thursday evening, but one of our group is arriving Friday around 8:30 a.m. at IAH so we will be working with that time frame. We will check the website for updates. Fingers crossed for good weather for the weekend. Thanks!
