Rental Car & paying Tolls

We will be arriving into Houston from San Antonio by rental car. We are concerned with the Toll roads about how to pay them.

Rental car compnay that we were looking at has a reader but costs us $12USD a day which we thought was way over the top considering we may not go through many tolls in our 6 days hire. Well not to use up $12 a day anyway.

If we have to use a toll road do they have change booths?

Or does anyone know if a prepaid card to a nominated amount is available for visitors like us

Many thx for any replies

Edwise31, be sure to select the avoid toll road options. There are no destinations where you must take a toll road.

Traffic should be light. However, when I moved to Houston, we arrived in the city at around 1am on a weekday (during the summer) and we still encountered areas of congested traffic. Pretty rare, but it can happen.

Recognizing that this tread started a long time ago, I'd still like to add my 2 cents worth in case anyone following may be planning to take toll roads.

Last week we mapped our return from Port Aransas to Houston's IAH and decided to use toll roads as we were arriving on a busy Friday afternoon.

It was quite the experience.

We went through 3 toll stations ... at a cost of $1.75 at each station. We had to filter through the toll booths that 'provided change'.

At the last toll booth we thought we had it made .. it required the 'exact change' ... we were sitting pretty with one UDS and 3 quarters ... the amount we needed to get through ...

Not so, exact change means exactly what it said .. 'change' ... we needed 7 quarters.

So, if you're planning to use these toll roads ... save up your quarters.

We were glad that we weren't in a hurry to catch a flight.

Agreed that without an EZ Tag, tolls would be a mighty hassle. In some areas, EZ Tag is the only acceptable payment method. It was worth paying the EZ Tag fee for the car rental. To follow up on the previous posts, we never drove to or from IAH to the city of Houston - - we were in surrounding areas. Might not be necessary to use tolls roads if you are only going to/from the city.

I asked the original Q. And we are now home some 2mths since our trip & overall had no probs getting around Houston & surrounds. Tho we did panic when we saw an EZ Tag sign at any time but our nav man did the job & we wld turn off prior to the toll. While it did take longer from A to B we were happy to see the burbs of Houston anyway

But if like us from overseas be prepared for traffic we have never encountered before & we have driven many times in America . And there are only two speeds very fast & stop.

With big 4 x 4's towering over our med size rental on 4 lane highways going way over the speed limit intimadating you betcha & crazy drivers who just decide at the last minute to come from the far outside lane across 4 lanes to exit a good stiff drink was required once safely back in our hotel. But in saying that I wld not lump all Texan drivers in the fast & furious category as these types of drivers are the same the world over just that we had not encountered them before
