East Coast

We will be staying near the east coast of Istria next year. Where would you recommend visiting? We're looking for a nice spot that's not too busy!

What time of year are you visiting? Are you looking for a coastal location or a hill top town? Do you plan to hire a car? What are you hobbies / interests? Why the east coast, have you thought about other parts of Istria?

Where exactly are you going to be and it would be helpful to know what kinds of things you are looking to do.

We're going to be staying near Barban so could head to either coast for days out (with two kids aged ten and eight).

We know a lot about the west coast, but no so much about the east.

Wondering if there are any interesting places to visit or recommended beaches?

Rabac is located close to Barban, one of the largest Istria resorts. Rabac can be very busy during July and August due to extensive tourist development but it is still pretty fishing village :-

Close to Rabac is the old mining town of Labin which is worth a visit, further info on above link.

There are also some lovely medieval towns close by such as Gračišće and Pićan. If you wanted to venture further inland the hilltop town of Buje, Groznjan and the attractive village of Draguc are all worth a visit.

Best beaches of Istria :-

Hope this helps. Happy planning!

If you want somewhere less busy I would suggest Lovran. Just 5 kms south of Opatija. You can walk along the sea walk (lungomare) from Lovran to Opatija. Google Lovran photos to get some ideas.

How about heading out to an island such as Cres or Losinj?

If you don't like too much crowd, I would recommend the same as Barry: take the ferry in Brestova and visit Cres island. You can reach beaches of incredible beauty with much lesser people than the beaches on the coast. Sometimes you might be alone with your family on those beaches!

If you hire a small boat, or if you are willing to walk 30-60 minutes on footpaths, then you can enjoy the best ones.

I was born on the west coast of Istria close to Rovinj but have always thought that the east coast has much more to offer in dramatic scenery.

I never tire of the coastal road from Barban up to Volosko, stopping several times along the way to take it all in. There are lovely beaches too. Moscenicka Draga and Medveja have such clear water, even though they are more fine gravel than sand.

Go down to Brestova and take the ferry out to Cres, travelling further to Losinj and Krk if you want. The Nature Park in Kamenjak is another place worth visiting with the possibility of a wreck dive if you wish.

Add on a list Ravni & Sveta Marina.

Medveja beach update:Since 2009 the beach is leased out and managed by a grade "A" meathead who put bag searching bouncers at the gates.Mandatory deck chair rent.Fraction of the beach is allowed for commons.

Alternative can be Brsec. You'll love the beach and driving to/from it.
