9 Days in Istria

I'm having trouble deciding where my "home base" should be in Istria, in other words, where I will book a small private room. I've been looking at Rabac or Rovinj so far. Being walking distance to a beach and restaurants is important for me. Also, I would like a place with good nightlife and things to do when the sun goes down.

On another note, I am wondering how easy it is to get from town to town by bus, or would it be best to rent a car to travel around?

Any recommendations?

I'd suggest a car. There is lot's of cool places and connections aren't that great (not saying there is no public transport, but can be tedious to get your travelling done, i.e. you easily could do Hum in the morning and lunch in Motovun, but not with public transport...).

Personally I'd go for Rovinj. Good places for some nightlife (but don't expect mega-discos), good restaurants and the town is really beautiful.

Istra is not so big. I think also that if you have car it is better.

If you are looking nightlife Rovinj ( Monvi centar for night) beaches are good and city is nice it is good choice. Poreč and Pula are close 30 km each city

if you need accommodation in Rovinj dont hasitate to contact me at:

If I am in your boots, I would stay in Umag. Everything is close, traffic is not so bad, you can get everywhere much quicker than fight ridiculous crowd of Rovinj.

If you like gambling and casinos, Portoroz in Slovenia is just about 20-30 minutes drive.

Hi Elena and nice to see more fellow Canadians visiting the area. Our company deals with car rental in the area and I also lead tours for the CAA through Slovenia and Croatia. Living next door in Piran obviously know Istria very well and car is the way to go. As mentioned by another contributor tons of places to see, and local bus transportation is adequate but not at all complete plus tough to fit into a tourist svhedule, meaning ok if you go to work and back by bus but thats it, the schedules are very limited.I will guess that casino visiting is not a priority and even though I live in Slovenia would not suggest it as a homebase for you, plus the border crossing Slovenia-Croatia can take secons, minutes, or longer specialy in high season June, July, August. Yes Rovinj for sure I realy enjoy it, Umag is not that central for the visits you want, Pula and Porec are close, Opatija, Rijeka, and access to the islands are all within an hour by car. Let me know if you need car rates or other info, do come visit Portoroz, Piran, Koper here in Slovenia on a day trip, 9 days is long enough to give you the flexibility.
