best medieval town on the east coast?

Everyone raves about Rovinj, but is there a town with similar character on the east coast of Istria? We go to Europe more for old medieval architecture and history, but like walking to restaurants and shops too. Not so interested in the resort scene and crowds. We will have a car, and might just wander until we find the atmosphere we like. Will we be okay without reservations in May if we end up in Rovinj?

East cost of Istria is hilly and on this side there is not any town like Rovinj. But if you like old architecture, Istria is full of interesting old cities on very intetest landscape. Visit Motovun and Groznjan in inland, Porec... Pula for famous Arena and lot of Roman remains... you will enjoy for sure.

To be honest most towns in Istria are worth visiting for architecture and history.

I would visit: Groznjan, Motovun, Porec and the amphitheatre and the old centre of Pula too.

The end of May should not be too busy but it may be better and provide peace-of-mind to have a advance reservation in Rovinj.

Eastern coast is quite different, but it doesn't make it any less attractive. There is a small hill town of Mošćenice, right above Mošćenička Draga, probably the best known beach on that side of Istria. See Mošćenice in my MTB Street view movie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6strAAXnK7U

But you surely should take a look at Volosko, a small and incredible fishing village, then Opatija (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXKdKyvQbQE), Ičići, Ika, Lovran, Medveja (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oat_XIUMkEg). I think Brseč, Rabac and Labin are woth a visit. Also, Kastav is close to Opatija and very nice, with that medieval feel to it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Vj8Mc-pTCo). And be sure to climb Mt. Učka's Vojak peak for breathtaking view of entire Istria and Kvarner Bay (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOJ1ZPCJ_SY). Motovun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od8WboFtnWU) is great but in central Istria :) and Grožnjan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obZhjAH3Nh8) is magical, but more in the Western Istria.

In Volosko, do go through all the narrow paths between the old stone houses, walk along the Lungomare, a 100 year old coastal path, all the way to Opatija. Visit the incredible parks, the promenade with the central beach area, have a drink in hotel Milenij's terrace, try icecream at Kraš, enjoy the beautiful architecture. In Lovran (reachable by Lungomare, you can see the entire path in my movies) make sure not to miss the old town (above the main street).

And, if you do visit Kastav, do go to Rijeka (very close) and visit the Trsat castle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7VTsHBfvYs), the pedestrian zone Korzo in the centre, have a drink on Ri shopping mall's first floor, on a huge terrace overlooking the port (don't think the drinks are anything special, but the view and the feeling are great), then walk around the port area itself (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGujSXtTAwU) and do visit the green/fish market (but you should be there around 7am to get the best feeling). And you have many more movies in my channel to explore the area.
