South Padre Island or Port Aransas?

We are deciding between a week stay at SPI or PA at the end of April. We are an active retired couple and want beachfront, good restaurants nearby, and outdoor activities. Since we will be hitting Austin and area before the beach, we're looking for some r and r but still some fun time. Any preference as to which place?

Hello, IndianaSweetpea --

I personally like the Port Aransas/Mustang Island area best. The South Padre beaches/water are a little bit nicer (less Mississippi mud as you go farther south...), but PA tends to be less commercialized and quieter... and with Corpus Christi so near, there's plenty to do besides watching the waves break on the beach!

Also, it's a long drive to Port Isabel and South Padre from where I live in Beaumont, Texas... so that factors in to my decision! Since you are coming from the Austin area, it's would not be quite as far for you. But depending on where you're headed after the beach, the distance is something to keep in mind...

April may be a bit early for beach weather, even in Texas, but hopefully you'll have mild weather and plenty of sun!

If you have any other questions, please ask! And have a great time in Texas!

Deb is pretty much spot on in my opinion. South Padre is a much farther drive from Austin. (200 miles to Corpus Christi, 370 miles to South Padre) South Padre is generally for a younger crowd with beaches lined with condos. Port Aransas has a sleepy fishing village vibe with the proximity to Corpus Christi and its attractions. Port A also has a lot of quirky little restaurants and more wildlife opportunities. There are dolphin excursions, the Aransas Wildlife refuge and its Whooping Cranes. You are but an hour away from the King Ranch and its fabulous nature tours.

South Padre's advantages would include a better chance for warmer weather as it is farther south and the beaches are nicer than Mustang Island.

Thanks for your input! We have decided to try both places due to your comments! Any good suggestions for a beach front place to stay?

Please let us know your price range per night, and the type of property you'd prefer (luxury, chain, don't mind roughing it, etc.), and you'll get better suggestions!
