A month's vacation

Hi: If we as a 55 yr. old couple were to rent a condo, home etc. for one month, what would entertain us. We are healthy and like to take in the beach sun and read but we also have to do something every few days. It could be golf but what else is there to do on the island. It looks beutiful. Thanks Wayne C. christwayne@gmail.com

There is a huge crowd of "Winter Texans" that head down every winter and stay for weeks and months. I know that there are organized tours to Mexico. There are several websites that have more info; just google "winter texans". On SPI itself, there is fishing, dolphin cruises, and a movie theater. The island hosts special events through the winter designed to entertain the snow birds.

Hello fellow Canadians! Pretty good haul from Edmonton to SPI! Of course, the beach is the big thing here in the winter, but there is excellent golf around, with several courses nearby. Fishing can be either deep sea, bay fishing, surf fishing or just throwing in a line at the Jetties. The boats that go out every day to watch the dolphins do an exceptional job with Scarlett Colley's being one of the best. It is a real eco-education. The Laguna Atascosa Wildlife refuge is interesting, with a self driven tour, especially early morning or early evening. There are horseback rides on the beach, dune buggies, parasailing. There is good birdwatching if you're that way inclined. There is also the Sea Turtle Centre, the Sealife Centre, the PanAm Coastal Studies Laboratory and the Beachcomber Museum.

Drive to Nuevo Progreso and walk across to Mexico for the day. If you're there in February, the first weekend has a PRCA rodeo in Los Fresnos (30 mi away)...a great time with top class competitors. There's a big fleamarket every Friday in Brownsville (20 mi). Port Isabel, just across the causeway, has some interesting curio and antique shops. The town also has three museums. There is a greyhound racetrack in Harlingen(45 minutes away).

There are gulf front bars with excellent local entertainment and Club Pelican West and the Radisson Resort have good bands nightly. The convention centre on the island often has entertainmentand and there are, through the winter, events put on especially for Winter Texans. Also some really good restaurants!

There's probably more that I've forgotten, including very friendly locals and you could always run into someone from home. There are plenty of Canadians here in the winter!
