Woodlands is about 45 minutes (without traffic) to downtown (museum/arts district). The Woodlands is quite nice, mall, lots of chain restaurants, etc. though it's a little too country-clubish for my tastes. There are some tourist spots nearby. Old Town Spring has a good amount of shopping boutiques. You can find antiques in the small towns just north of the Woodlands like Conroe.

It seems everything is nice about The Woodlands. As mentioned above, there are lots of shops, restaurants of every kind, movie theater, etc. There is also the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion for outdoor concers. Golf is plentiful in this area.

Old Town Spring to me is just a tourist shopping area. There are some unique shops, but most just overpriced. It is a bunch of shops, spread among 3-4 streets. It is uncomfortable in the summer because of the heat, so be prepared if you go.

I don't know of any other things in The Woodlands area. North of there is Huntsville, lots of historical things there. Otherwise, downtown Houston (all around actually) there is plenty to do.
