Boulder or Escalante

Have booked accommodations for trip in July/August to Zion & Bryce NP. Having stumbled across Grand Staircase-Escalante Nat'l Monument, would like to book 3 nights in the area and hike. Please advise which location is closer for hiking (Peek-a-Boo, Golden Cathedral?, Calif Creek Falls). Boulder Mtn Lodge is booked for wedding so not sure whether to settle for Poles Place or go to Escalante.

Have just started researching so any advice you have to offer would be much appreciated.

Peek-a-Boo, Spooky and Devil's Garden are all off Hole in the Rock Road and are closer to Escalante as is Calf Creek Falls. Not sure about Golden Cathedral but I am sure one of the local experts can answer that. The distance between Boulder and Escalante is not great but the road is two lane and steep in spots so requires careful driving at slower speeds.

Calf Creek Falls upper/lower trailheads are off highway 12.

Peekaboo/Spooky are in the Dry Fork region of Hole in the Rock road. Neon Canyon/Golden Cathedral are off the Egypt road spur of Hole in the Rock Road. Consult with the local BLM visitor office in Escalante, they will likely recommend you know about road conditions before venturing off the pavement.

Boulder Mountain Lodge is nice especially with Hell's Backbone Grill next door. But if it's booked, go to Escalante which is closer to more of the places you'll want to hike.

We stayed in Escalante (last week) for 2 nights at the Slot Canyon Inn, and spent one day (9 hrs) hiking several slot canyons/trails off Hole-in-the-Rock Road, and Devil's Garden another day. Slot Canon Inn also has a beautiful outdoor restaurant on site, as well as petroglyphs only a 2 minute walk from the Inn. The drive to Boulder from Escalante is breathtaking! But it IS steep (and very narrow at one stretch) - so I'm glad we didn't need to go between the 2 towns but once!

I always stay at the Prospector Inn in Escalante.

Above average decent motel.
