We strongly recommend hiking guide, Shawn Miller, owner of Escape Goats of Escalante. Unlike the other areas in Utah we visited, most of the hikes in the Grand Staircase do not have well marked trails. Unless a person is well versed in navigation techniques, he will require a guide to get a true picture of this territory. On the first hike, my husband and he went to Neon Canyon from the Egypt trailhead. Most of the route was cross country and Shawn was consistently describing the plant and animal life. In addition, he found ancient artifacts and related their archeological significance. The views and scenery were overwhelming and the added benefit of being the only ones hiking here gave one the sense of the area’s immensity and remoteness. We both joined Shawn the following day on a 5 mile hike to scenic and colorful Bighorn Canyon. Two of Shawn’s affectionate and friendly goats, Poochy and Poppers accompanied us and carried our supplies. He continued to explain the foliage and also took us to a slot canyon. We are in our mid fifties, in reasonably good but by no means great shape, and felt comfortable doing the hikes. In addition to being informative, Shawn was a warm and personable guide, one who we felt safe and comfortable with. So, if you love hiking and want a special experience in the Grand Staircase area, we advise you to contact Shawn Miller of Escape Goats.
