Summer Vacation 1st Trip to Vermont/ Bennington Area Help!

Hello, any info would be appreciated. We've never been to Vermont and became interested when finding numerous antique malls in a search of the area.

My husband loves the beach and wonders if going to Bennington, Vermont wouldn't be a "real summer vacation".

Are there any lakes or beachy settings in Bennington?

Also, we would like to be in a nice hotel that is walking distance to eateries or things to do, like movies. Is this possible?

Can you describe what Bennington is like?

What would a couple do there for 8 days/7nites in the summer?

Thank you!

Bennington is a little tricky, but it is a lovely place. Let’s start with the beach issue. Bennington doesn't have any lakes. But a short drive to the north will bring you to Lake Shaftsbury State Park www.vtstateparks.com/htm/shaftsbury.cfm which is a tiny lake with a nice swimming area. Also in the Bennington area are lake Paren in North Bennington [not a favorite of mine, but a nice little lake], and just a drive up the mountain will get you Harriman Reservoir www.vtstateparks.com/htm/shaftsbury.cfm There are several other small lakes in under a hours drive, so I'm sure you'll be able to find someplace to do the beachy thing.

Bennington isn't really a walking town. It does have a nice down town, with some truly unique shops and eateries, but I don't believe there are any hotels close by, a few Inns are located on the side streets. If you wish to go the movies you'll have to drive to the other side of town [not that this will take you more than say 7 or 8 minutes]. There is a new Hampton Inn with site of the movie theater.

What else to do in Bennington in the summer...well you’re planning on going antiquing. You'll want to make a trip up in the Bennington Monument , and walk to the Old First Church and around the cemetery next to it, where Robert Frost is buried bennington.com/chamber/walking/monumentdescr… Drive up the north one day and check out the outlet shopping in Manchester. There are lots of museum in the area, and take in a play at one of the many Play House in the area. Use Bennington as the jump off point for many short day trips.

I think you'll find plenty to fill up your time. Mostly Bennington is about slowing down, and enjoying your time.

You may want to spend a few days in Bennington and then move on to a real beach in MA or RI before heading home, if you really want to do both. As mentioned, Vermont is not a beach destination. Real swimmers go to Lake Paran in N. Bennington (clean, cool water, never crowded). Hanging on the beach type folk go to Lake Shaftsbury.

In Bennington you may want to choose one of the many lovely b&bs in the area. We have a movie plex, not really walking distance to anyplace (except AlexAndra B&B). Aside from what the previous poster had to say, there is the Appalachian Trail close by along w/ numerous other hiking opportunities, fantastic biking, the historic Park-McCullough house in N. Bennington, a new Robert Frost Museum in his former house in Shaftsbury, etc. Also, in nearby Williamstown and N. Adams, MA (1/2 hour away) are several fantastic art museums, and the Williamstown Theater Festival. Williamstown also has an independent cinema (Images). Oh and fly fishing or tubing or canoeing on the famous Battenkill River in Arlington.
