Recommendations needed for Labor Day 2008 trip

Me, my wife and 5 year old daughter are planning to visit Brattleboro this Labor Day weekend. Any recommendations for family friendly lodging and things to do? We're open to pretty much anything. Restaurant recommendations would be helpful too.

Looking for an authentic VT experience. :-)

Thanks.

How do you define "authentic VT experience"?

If it is defined as the classic "village green with well-kept houses and lots of nearby farms", Brattleboro is definitely not it.

OTOH, if you're looking for the "iconoclastic neo-hippie town" that looks and feels like it's still 1968, Brattleboro fits the bill quite well.

That will either appeal to you, or it will be repugnant, and I'm not sure which will be the case for you.

You might want to check out this farm in Wilmington, about a 1/2 hour away: http://www.adamsfamilyfarm.com/. On the way there, you will pass over Hogback Mtn, with the 100 mile view. On a clear day you can see Mt. Monadnock in NH and MA. If you want to drive over to Bennington, the fantastic Garlic Festival is on Sat. and Sunday: http://www.lovegarlic.com/

Also check out the Farmer's Market on Saturday in West Brattleboro for great local food.

I am not familiar with lodging in Brattleboro, but I do know they have a great health food coop if you need snacks and a nice downtown area for browsing around with several restaurants. I am sure you can find some short local nature walks or hikes in the area. Enjoy!

A day trip to Stonewall Farm in Keene NH, just over the river would be fun for your little one.
