Things to see and do Champlain Lake Region, Burlington Etc

Hello-

We annually go to VT for the Columbus Day Weekend in October. Every year we try to see some favorites and some new things. This year we are staying in Castleton and on Sat we will be working our way north to the Champlain Lake Region. Looking for must sees or do's along the way. We have been this way on other trips on Rte 7 into Canada and years ago did the Burlington area. Would like any feedback on most scenic route thinking of going up Rte 73 to Rte 125 to Rte 7 and coming home Rte 7 to Rte 22a? Specifically what towns are notable along the way....Brandon, Shelburne, Essex Junction, Colchester and does anyone know how good the applefest in South Hero is and is that accessible by road or ferry? We have the whole day to spend roundtrip. Any info would be appreciated!!!!

Applefest in South Hero is a great event, but traffic can be very slow and thick. Don't plan on being able to zip in and zip out, it will take time.

You access South Hero via road Route 2, a causeway with the lake on both sides, nice pull offs so you can enjoy the view just past Sand Bar State park.

Applefest is a fun time, parade, yard sales, Apple PIE!

Picking apples is fun too, as is visiting the Cider Place (and Ben and Jerry's) on Rt. 100 in Waterbury.

Other nice activities: Toll Road or Gondola up Mt Mansfield. Great views and nice lunch/dinner options nearby in Stowe.

Thanks Signof thetimes and Xeena.

Chris and Liz thanks for the suggestions on Waterbury and Stowe but we have already done these areas. And we have visited central and southern Vermont alot.

I really appreciate the suggestions for the Burlington, Shelburne and Lake Champlain area, since I'm not too familiar with these areas.

Some favorite things to do in Burlington:

Walk around Church St. for shopping, food, pubs & music at night

See a show at the Flynn Theater - a nice old art deco style place that's been nicely restored for performing arts.

Walk, bike or skate on the bike path alongside the lake

Check out some of the funky small art galleries

Get some gravy fries and a snack of choice at Nectars on Main Street

Try the locally brewed beers at the VT Pub, or 3 Needs (both on College St)

Have dinner at Tratorria Delia (Superb high-end Italian fare with an extensive wine list)
