My picks roughly in order:

Hilton, Marriott, Sheraton, Holiday Inn. Doubletree, Anchorage.

For cheaper digs, Motel 6 in Colchester (8 miles away).

Just look in South Burlington. As the above poster mentions, there are a cluster of hotels there. My son is a freshman at Champlain - wonderful college! We did a similar trip last year visiting UVM, Champlain and St. Michaels. Just did a quick check for the night of the 15th, and even those are sold out. Is that family weekend for UVM? I know it's not Champlain's because I'll be there for that one the following weekend!

When I did college visits, I actually found it better to spend the night in the college town that we would be visiting in the morning. In your case, that would be in Bennington. With all the flood damage down there though, the hotels may still be filled with people that need temporary housing. Here's a Bennington link http://www.bennington.com/lodging/

There is no flood damage to any lodging in Bennington, nor was there any at any time. Not sure where the above poster is getting this info, but perhaps s/he is confusing Bennington with another VT town...but none that I've heard of!

The bigger issue is the short notice, one night on a weekend, and the fact that it is prime foliage/tourist season. I would check south of Burlington, any town heading down towards Bennington. Rutland maybe?

I'm glad you said that NBPINVT, because if one googles Bennington flood damage, there are a lot of articles like this one: vtdigger.org/2011/08/29/irene-bennington/ For those of us that live in the mid-Atlantic states, it's hard to know exactly what is back in order in VT, and what is not.

Here is their list of hotels that may be offering UVM discounts: http://alumni.uvm.edu/homecoming/travel.asp

You might also try a little farther north, in North Hero (at Shore Acres or North Hero House). It would be farther to drive (about 40 minutes), but a beautiful location.

But they are heading South after visiting Burlington. Seems like someplace between Burlington and Bennington would be the answer.

I would suggest St. Albans, which is about 25 minutes North of Burlington.

Again, the poster is going SOUTH after visiting UVM/Champlain and is from NJ. Unless there are no hotels available between Burlington and Bennington, I don't know why they would want to look North......
