Getting around in Sugarbush?

We are finding it very difficult to find a car rental agency that will allow us to pick up a car at the BVT airport and then drop off in another location. We will arrive at BVT but then plan to take the Amtrak home from Waterbury. We will be staying close to the sugarbush access road. Are taxis readily available? Is the shuttle service reliable?

Why not rent a car in Waterbury? There's a Thrifty there and maybe others. Take a cab from BTV, it's about a half hour from the airport. There is a free shuttle bus service in the Mad River Valley in the winter, which is convenient to take to the ski areas even if you do have a rental car, but you'd have a lot more flexibility in the evenings with a car.

thank you! It seems a bit complicated to drop the car off since we plan to leave from the Waterbury Amtrack station on January 1st. It seems all the car rental places are closed that day.

Or drop the car back in BTV, then taxi to Waterbury. Guessing the taxi will be ~$60. I like Everywhere Taxi - usually the lower cost of the bunch.

Trip Note --Just a note that a rental car is a must while in Warren/Sugarbush. There was only one cab company and though the owner was very friendly. We felt a little bit fleeced. The shuttle to the ski resort is nice but we ended up waiting quite a bit...not the most enjoyable thing with a 5 year old and freezing temps outside.

You can drop the car back in BTV and taxi to the Essex Jct. Amtrak station, which is just a couple miles from the BTV airport and taxis are readily available. I assume you're trying to get on the Vermonter, which leaves Essex Jct. and heads through Waterbury. You won't be adding that much time onto your train ride.
