Pumpkin Patch Near Charlottesville

We'll be visiting Charlottesville in several weeks and I'd love to visit a pumpkin patch....one with pumpkins for sale, maybe activities, perhaps with cider doughnuts for sale. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Carter Mountain Orchard (http://www.cartermountainorchard.com/) is a good one. Just south of Charlottesville... maybe 15 minutes out. It's mainly an Apple place... and the doughnuts are delicious.

This list of places near C’ville having pumpkins & farm-related activities comes from the October 2007 issue of Albemarle Family magazine (www.AlbemarleFamily.com):

Belvedere Plantation -- pumpkin patch, rides, petting zoo www.belvedereplantation.com (800) 641-1212

Double B Farm (Rhoadsville, VA) pumpkin patch, petting zoo, face painting (540) 854-4277

Greenfield Farm (Ruckersville, VA) corn maze, petting zoo (434) 985-7653

a.m. Fog has a variety of produce including pumpkins (540) 456-7100 amfog.net (call first)

Critzer’s has pick your own pumpkins & other seasonal produce (540) 456-4772 (call first)

Round Hill Farm (Orange County) 700-acre working farm w/ hayrides, petting zoo, etc. www.round-hill-farm.com (540) 854-7398

Chester Farms (Staunton, VA) Wagon ride to the pumpkin patch www.chesterfarms.com (540) 337-7282

Drumheller’s Orchard (Lovingston, VA) they have pumpkins but not sure about a pick-your-own operation (434) 263-5036

Carter’s Mountain Orchard (Charlottesville – near Monticello) – primarily an apple orchard, but they do have pumpkins for sale (434) 977-1833 www.CarterMountainOrchard.com They also have homemade cider donuts (the smell is intoxicating) and some of the best views of C'ville from atop the mountain.

Unfortunately a lot of these places & other farm-related activities (like the local farmers’ markets) end at the end of October, so you’ll definitely want to call ahead to be sure they’re open if you’re planning to visit in November or December.

We're bringing our son and 3 of his friends to UVA for his 14th birthday to see a football game. We're trying to find a condo, cabin or hotel suite to rent in a place that's not advertised as romantic (i.e. kid-friendly) so that the boys can spend the night after the game and see the campus.

I see you live in Charlottesville; do you have any suggestion?

I'm assuming that you need more than 1 bedroom. The Residence Inn is not too far from the University (although not walking distance) and has 1-2 BR suites with a small kitchen. Any place that had a cabin would be at least 30 min away from campus. Be sure to walk down University Ave where the bookstore and places to eat are located. The boys would also enjoy the Downtown Mall as well as walking around the campus. It's a pedestrian mall a short drive from UVA with a lot of interesting places to eat and shop (for parents). Depending on when you come, Fridays after Five is a free concert at the ampitheatre at one end of the mall. Lots of teens on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Have fun!

If you go to Carter Family Orchard on the mountain, be sure to dress warmly. The winds are fierce, and in the fall, they are very cold. But the views are worth it!
