Long winter weekend for family & dog

We are driving from New York City to Athens, VA over MLK weekend. We are Mom, Dad, older kids (23 & 16) and dog. Where should we stay, eat (vegetarian friendly), sightsee? Thinking of two nights in or near Charlottesville,. Interested in scenic drives, short hikes, Monticello, arts, farms, history. This Forum lists wonderful sounding places but what's best in winter? Where can we lodge with dog or board her at night?

There are few scenic drives better than Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, so weather permitting, that might be something to consider as well as enjoying a hike while there. Check out www.nps.gov/shen for additional details about the Park and keep the Park info number handy for road closure and other updates, 540-999-3500. For pet friendly lodging check out www.petfriendlyhotels.com and www.petswelcome.com

While in Charlottesville, consider a tour of Monticello and if you like to hike there is a beautiful trail leading to the visitor center called Saunders-Monticello Trail, www.monticello.org/parkway/trail.html

Hope this helps.

Currently, all stretches of Skyline Drive are closed due to snow, and considering the 20-30 inches the area got on 12/19-20 that still hasn't completely melted, and temps in the 20s, I would not expect anything up there to be open for a while.

Here is the page that has the status:

Check out Wintergreen Resort: www.wintergreenresort.com Even though you'll board the dog, there are lots of hiking trails, so you can "spring" her for hikes. It's about 1 hr SW of C'ville, but the drive is through a part of VA that you must see to believe. Lots of wineries in Nelson Co, between C'ville and W'green.

We have a house at Wintergreen, and they got 32 inches of snow up there. Not sure how much hiking you can do. Going there Friday-will report back.

As of Jan 10th, there still is a considerable amount of snow up in the mountains around Wintergreen. We have at least 12 inches in the woods behind our house, and it is crunchy, bust-through, not fun to walk in.

Have snowshoes? Yah-that would be fun!
