Travel time/distance

We plan to be in the area in late Oct. I have searched but can find no helpful info regarding how long (time wise) we should allow to get from Roanoke to Buena Vista via the Blue Ridge Parkway, and then from Buena Vista to Charlottesville again via BRP. Can anyone help?

Late October is usually a great time to travel the Blue Ridge Parkway. Here is a link to a useful BRP map............

…indigofiles.com/directory_planner/Map_2010.…

From Roanoke, approx. milepost 120, to Buena Vista, approx. milepost 30, the travel time will be 2+ hours (45mph) depending on your pace and stops to enjoy the scenery. From Buena Vista to Charlottesville via the BRPand I64 is 72 miles and travel time will be 1 hr 54 minutes according to Google maps. More good information on BRP at www.nps.gov/blri

Keep the BRP recorded information number handy for detours and other road status, 828-298-0398.

Hope this helps. Happy trails.

The speed limit on the Parkway is 35 mph. Be prepared for a lot of traffic that time of the year. Weekends will be even more busy. Don't worry if a particular view area is too crowded, there will be another one up the road. Be prepared to take your time- if you plan on making several stops to view the scenery or hike, add that to your time as well. Enjoy!

We have driven from Lexington (6 miles from BV) to Charlottesville many times. At non-peak times it usually takes us 2 and 1/2 hours, during leaf season it usually takes close to 5 hours.

As all have stated the drive times will vary depending on when you travel but peak leaf season will definately slow you down. My suggestion is to take your time and enjoy the beauty around you. The BRP is not a place to try to keep a time schedule.

Another option is to use I-81/ 64 from BV and then drive the BRP/Skyline Drive at your leisure from the Rockfich Gap entrance. You might even consider a limousine for a wine/ leaf tour depending on your length of stay.

Thanks. This info helps a lot. We are trying to plan between motels and make reservations before hand.

Thanks for the heads-up on the extra traffic. Had not factored that in.
