late winter/ early spring getaway with pregnant wife

My wife and I are planning a 3 or 4 night trip to charlottesville in february or march. We were originally planning a beach getaway, but the cost of flying and the unpredictability of pregnancy (twins!) led us to charlottesville.

We'll be driving in from Philly. It looks like the Omni would be good for us to be right in town for strolling/eating/shopping, so I'll probably go with that. The other option would be Boar's Head, so she could use the spa, but I'm leaning away from that.

Looking for ideas on:

1. Stops between Philly and Charlottesville (possibly traveling Rt. 29 on the way down and up 95 through DC on the way back? Any antique/second-hand stores to check out? Good food?)

2. A good place for a massage in Charlottesville. Surprisingly, it looks like the Omni doesn't have?

3. Nice, low key place for good, cheap food and local music for the evenings. We are both vegetarian, so italian, thai, mexican? What's good?

4. Is it worth checking out a UVA women's basketball game? How's the atmosphere?

5. Finally, I realize the weather is pretty much the same as in Philly, but for that and activities, should we try to hold out into March if possible? I'd like to plan soon, but obviously it will all depend on her.

All ideas are welcome! Thanks for helping me plan...

She'll be 15 weeks in early February, but with twins she'll be carrying more!

Thanks for the suggestion, Axle. The place looks wonderful, but it's not really our style. We'd much prefer to be somewhere that doesn't require jumping in the car every time we want to go somewhere. And we'd go nuts staying at that place, however beautiful, all weekend. We're more low key- looking for really good casual eateries, cool local music, unique shops and some people watching with a little pampering thrown in for good measure.

There are a handful of antique stores on 29, about 15 or 20 minutes north of Charlottesville. I can't think of the town name at the moment, but it's at the crossroads where you'd turn to go into Shenandoah National Park.

We've enjoyed the antique stores there.

Well, your choice of the Omni is good then. I also would choose a place with a very very flexible cancellation policy so as not to worry about cancelling for any reason. February down the 29 corridor cities can be a bad month for snow and ice. But sometimes it's lovely out.

For restuarants, Charlottesville in general has lots of great ones and lots of opinions on which ones to choose. (You might start a topic like "Babymoon special restaurant" and see what you get.)

These are ones we've enjoyed:

About four blocks walk eastish from the Omni is http://www.fleurierestaurant.com/

A few minute's drive westish is delightful

http://www.letoilerestaurant.com/ ..a lovely spot.

And this one...http://www.zocalo-restaurant.com/ just a couple of blocks walk.

And http://www.bluelightgrill.com/ just a little further.

We like Hamilton's for nice but casual lunch feel, a couple of blocks from the Omni too: http://www.hamiltonsrestaurant.com/about.html

And Escafe offers luch and dinner and is right by the hotel:

I haven't tried the spas yet but friends have enjoyed two spas on the Downtown Mall. None have tried both, so they can't compare the two. Look them up and maybe start a post like "City Spa or Oasis Day spa".

Let me catch my breathe and say Congrtulations!! and Best Wishes to you, your wife and new babies!!

When we are in Charlottesville we also really enjoy the plethora of bookstores on the Mall and the artistic talent including handmade jewelry and folkart.

Another favorite stop is London's Bathecary. Heavently. Fabulous. A vast array of the finest European beauty and grooming supplies for ladies and gentlemen. The finest soaps and lotions, colgnes and shaving creams and Mason Pearson hairbrushes. The old old companies and the newer ones. Penhaligons, Roger & Gllet, and Acqua di Parma (a bit new at its 1930s start) and O'Occitane and Crabtree & Evelyn. Londons Bathecary is also online. It's Charlottesville shop is in an old building at 2nd and Water just at the edge of the Mall in a sort of rambling room after room. And the service is absolutely wonderful ever time we have been there. They will help you find things, give you info, and even volunteer if an alternative is on sale. They care.

for live music, you can check out the Jefferson Theater or the Southern on the DT Mall for national acts, and places like Millers and Maya will have free local bands on weekends. (millers has more jazzy stuff but is a bit of a dive. maya is more upscale.) you can check www.readthehood.com for live music calendars.

for restaurants, i think continental divide is the best place for the money, which is a five or ten minute walk from the omni. most entrees are ten to twelve bucks.

Oasis has a great prenatal massage. The omni would be a good choice. It's at one end of the pedestrian mall which has tons of restaurants and music venues. Ming Dynasty is a great vegetarian Chinese restaurant a few minutes drive away. Congrats!
