1. Re: Camping near Monticello

I researched tent camping sites in the general Charlottesville area but the trip was cancelled so I can't recommend any them but here are some you can check out:

Shenandoah Natl Park Loft Mountain and Big Meadows Campgrounds

Heavenly Acres Campground Madison Rd Stanardsville 434 985-6601

North 340 Campground Waynesboro 540 943-9573

Sherando Lake Campground

Crabtree Falls Campground Tyro VA 540 377-2066

Please post any additional information or reviews if you stay in the campgrounds. Hope this helps.

The closest campground is Charlottesville KOA. You can google it and find their website. It's fine, the tent area is separated a bit from the RV's so not too loud. The shower and bathroom facilities are nice. It is about 10 minutes from Monticello.

If you want to be farther out and have a little more rustic campsite with outdoor activities, I would suggest Sherando Lake Campground. It is run by the U.S. Forest Service. The lake area is beautiful and there are great opportunities for hiking and fishing. It would be a little cold in May for swimming.
