Just returned - my humble opinion

Hi everyone!

We recently returned from our trip to Chinc. (my first visit), and we had a great time! We were there during the hurricane (if you want to call it that), and we didn't let that affect our trip at all! We stayed at the Island Motor Inn, which I thought was very nice for the price (we paid about $145 per night). I liked that it was on the water, and had that very nice boardwalk all along the property. We had breakfast every morning at the cafe at our hotel and enjoyed it very much. I know that a lot of people thought it was pricey, but I didn't think it was too bad considering the quality of the food (the eggs benedict and the specialty french toast made with grand marinier were great!). I had asked a question on the board before we left concerning toddler friendly restaurants, but I really didn't need to worry about that. Everyone on the island was so friendly (especiall the waitstaff), that I never felt unwelcome with my small son. We ate at Don's our first night. They had some kind of a special senior buffet set up, so it was so noisy in there that no one noticed my son with his portable DVD player blaring Elmo. I had the crab cakes, and I thought that they were delicious, no grease whatsoever. My son's mac and cheese, though, was awful, very mushy. The next day (Sat) was the day the storm came through, so we tried to amuse ourselves with shopping. We had lunch at Maria's, which was very good, and we had the place to ourselves, so again, no issues. That night we went to the Village. Now this was my son's one night to have a meltdown. I ordered him spaghetti (a mistake in hindsite), which he proceeded to try and throw all over the place. Luckily, there was no one seated at the table next to us. He did manage to launch one cucumber far enough to hit a man seated several tables away on his back (my sister swears he's going to be a MLB pitcher), but the man was very nice about it, he even laughed. Luckily, the staff at the Village were so nice, they allowed us to bring his stroller in and set his DVD up on a chair, so that he could recline, and he eventually fell asleep, allowing us to enjoy our dinner. The food here was really great. I had the lobster, which was delicious. Next day, we got subs from Ledo, which we ate on the beach. Very good. That night, we decided not to chance another public dinner, and got take out from Bill's. When we went to pick it up, I was glad we did. There would not have been a lot of room in that place if Talan (my son) had another meltdown. The food from Bill's was fabulous. I had his crab soup. So spicy, and so good. I also had the stuffed mushrooms, a ceasar salad, and the shrip wrapped in bacon, stuffed with basil and covered with BBQ sauce. That was such a suprise. What a great mix of flavors. We all really enjoyed Bill's. Last full day, we had Woody's BBQ for lunch, and we all liked it. My mom thought it could have been more saucy, but good nonetheless. Last night back to the Village for some red meat. I had the filet, and it was great, though slightly overcooked. Talan, however, loved it, and ate almost half of my steak!! His little belly was so stuffed, that he didn't even want any ice cream from Mr. Whippy's that night (a nightly ritual). We really enjoyed our stay. The beach was lovely, Talan had a great time in the sand and with the sea gulls!!! The water was really rough, but suprisingly warm. The only thing that we didn't understand was why everything closed so early. I understand that it's not the height of the season, but still, it's a tourist town, I can't believe that everything closes before nine (and that includes restaurants). I just wish things would have been open a little later. Every night after dinner, we would put Talan in his stroller, and take a walk around town, and the place looked like a ghost town. The few people who were on their porches looked at us like we were crazy for walking so late (9:00!!!!!). Don't understand that, and was wondering if it is always like that. However, we are looking forward to a return trip next year. It was a great place to get Talan accustomed to the beach.

FYI: To all parents travelling with a small child, invest in a portable DVD player. They're small enough and quiet enough not to disturb other patrons in restaurants, and it saved my life on this vacation! Trust me, it's the best $150 you'll ever spend!

Regarding the early closings - I'm sure you've heard the expression "early to bed...early to rise"? We get up early down here!

Tryin2GetBy, ease up will ya? Melanie didn't write anything negative in her trip report at all. In fact, she only had good things to say. I know that, based on what I've seen on your other posts, you are quite 'armed-&-ready-to-defend' on behalf of the island & fellow locals, based on your experiences with some less-than-hospitable tourists (which, by the way, tourists AND locals can be in-hospitable, regardless of the location, on or off the island, simply because they are people, & not all people in general are as hospitable & thoughtful as the next- we ALL have to experience them on a daily basis) But, there was nothing you needed to defend with this post-er, because she actually had nice (& respectful) things to say already. She questioned things she's not used to, as anyone would, but there was nothing disrespectful about her questioning. Let her have her nice, respectable trip report in peace. It's what TA is for.

To add, her original post that you responded to was a year old.
