Chincoteague, VA and Assateague State Park, MD

We've never been to the Eastern Shore and are thinking about visiting for a couple of days next week. We're wondering what the similarities and differences are between these 2 areas, and if we should try to spend some time at each during our visit. Thanks! alashas www.youtube.com/user/honeymoon2virginia

First, a word of explanation - Assateague is one island, off the Eastern shore of VA & MD. It is divided into 2 sections - the northern, MD portion is a state park that permits camping. I have never camped there, but I've gone on day trips in the summer - never in the winter, so maybe others can comment on that experience. It is close to Ocean City and you can stay there (big hotels, boardwalk, etc.) and visit by day if you like. The southern, VA portion of Assateague is a National Wildlife Refuge. You cannot stay overnight there - most visitors stay on Chincoteague, which is a smaller barrier island that lies between the southern portion of Assateague and the Eastern shore of VA. Chincoteague is a little town - you reach it by driving over a causeway and then you can drive over a bridge to Assateague. The town of Chincoteague is beautiful in itself - we have hotels and restaurants, etc. but even in the height of summer, the atmosphere is much more laid-back than Ocean City. Which you prefer really depends on the type of experience you are seeking. It is certainly possible to pick out a hotel in either Ocean City or Chincoteague and then visit both sides of Assateague and enjoy both experiences! The drive takes a little over an hour, so it really would be easy to visit both places. Hope you enjoy your visit!
