Visit to Assateague in April

We are planning a long weekend at the end of April and are staying in Chincoteague. We will probably head to the MD side too. Do we have a better chance of seeing the ponies? Any things to do/see along the way?

We've seen the horses on every visit to the Maryland side. I'm not sure if it is a better chance, as you may very well see them on the Chincoteague side. But I like both parts of the park for different reasons.

It is about an hour's drive between them, flat and easy to navigate. There are some small towns along the way:

Pocomoke City

What a lovely time to visit!

I live in Virginia and I love Chincoteague but the Virginia side is a bit more restrictive than the Maryland side IMO. We have camped on the Maryland side several times and always see horses. It is about an hour's drive from Chincoteague and there are a few short trails you can enjoy while in the park. We're not camping there in 2013. The ponies seem to get more aggressive each year and we saw a group tear up a camp last time (opened the coolers, stomped on the containers, shoved items around). You're not supposed to approach the ponies but the a park ranger chased them off hollering and waving her arms. I'm 5'2" and one of the most aggressive barely cleared my shoulder. I kept my sand chair in front of me as a barrier (hah), didn't make eye contact, and kept saying "go on" until he and his females slowly walked on. I'll try camping there again when we get a camper, not just a flimsy tent. The ponies can be anywhere on the island during your visit so just keep driving around (or relaxing on the beach) until a group strolls by - sol cool.
