Bad Gastein would not be a logical stop, but what is logical in this world? Why did you choose Bad Gastein? It is a nice town formerly visited by the emperor and known as SPA town. Bad means bath....
The train ride would involve at least two transfers regardless of corridor.
Yes, there is a casino:
Do you have any suggestions for resorts or country homes in route or near Vienna?. Vienna seems like such a big city. Would like to visit but I do not think stay in after staying in Verona. Do not like lines and crowds..but I will trust your opinion on this. I was thinking of Bad gastien because of the waterfall and I was curious about the casino. Is it in the town? Another tacky american in Europe:) I love Bavaria and the Crystal therme..so thought it might be similar at Bad G. Thank you!
Although I am biased I would regard (imperial) Vienna as a worthwhile destination you should not miss - especially if someone flies from Vienna Int'l Airport. Enjoy the gorgeous architecture of the 19th century, enter one of the numerous churches (and of course the St. Stephens cathedral), visit one of the renowned museums or attend an opera at the Vienna State Opera. Order a cup of coffee and a delicious cake in a typical Viennese cafe and start relaxing.
I only wanted to express that Vienna has maybe more to offer than you probably expect. If you don't like large cities, then I would contemplate the following places:
Innsbruck (small city with stunning mountain views)
Salzburg (compact city where W.A. Mozart was born)
These cities would be conveniently located along a major railway corridor and both feature casinos.
South of Vienna is a town named Baden, which probably possesses the nicest casino in Northeastern Austria. Moreover, Vienna is easily reachable by train within 30 minutes if you desire urban amenities.
thank you so much for your advice. Baden sounds nice. I don't really need a casino but I do need a pool or a lake to swim and most hotels in Vienna did not seem to have outdoor pools. One other question. I have a 7:30 am flight-do the trains or bus run early enough to get to the airport in time? Which transport would you recommend? I have been reading more and see there is so much around Vienna. I am just sick of California traffic and that is what I think of in big cities, cars and no green trees, etc.
From Vienna you can take either an ordinary train, the express train CAT [from Wien-Mitte Interchange Station] or buses from different origination points. Baden is linked to the airport by bus. For departure times visit the website of Vienna Airport www.viennaairport.com
