Security of bikes on Ile de Re and distances between village

We are planning a trip to Ile de Re. Probably rent in either St. Martin or La Flotte. Just a few questions. We are thinking of renting bikes when there to get around. Are there places around the various villages to secure our rental bikes when strolling about? Also not having cycled for some years, is it easy enough to cycle between villages and what are the distances involved? Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.

When you hire the bike they provide you with a chain. In every village there are railings to which you can chain the bike.

Cycling on the Ile de Ré is a joy. There are dedicated cycle paths all over the island, and you will find there are numerous other people on bikes. The island is virtually flat, so even someone like myself who is not particularly fit can get about. You can start off with small trips, like St Martin to La Flotte, and then start to expand to other places, and soon you will think nothing of covering the whole island. The good thing is that you can find restaurants, bars, and cafes in every village to break your journey if you want to. We have often ridden from St Martin to Ars en Ré, and had lunch in the restaurant overlooking the port.

Thanks for that. Sounds magical. We were thinking of bringing our grandaughter with us who is aged 10 years old. Is it possible to rent bicycles for children?

Yes. I have also seen children's bicycles attached behind a single or even a tandem cycle. You can even have a small enclosed "caravan" containing a child attached to your bike.

You will see children a lot younger than 10 riding on the many cycle paths! The small ones travel in purpose built trailers. 5 and up on a specially adapted tandem type bike and heatthy confident ones on their own. Most routes are dedicated and safe. Where there are no railings people just group their bikes together and put the security device through all the wheels.

Villages are 3-5 miles apart so you are never far from a village. Paths are traffic-free, scenic & easy to navigate. Bikes are good quality 'Dutch style' upright types. You can even hire electric bikes which can give you varying amounts of electric assistance whilst you pedal. Ideal if you haven't cycled for a while.

Thanks. I am having difficulty finding a decent one bedroomed apartment or small house that is reasonably priced. I am looking to pay maximum €70 per night. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Ive found the responses to this really helpful - I've booked a week in la flotte (july'qe) and was wondering about the distances etc

This will be our first trip to il de re but it sounds perfect - does anyone know what the beach at la flotte is like ?

Donbard, the beach at Lat Flotte d'Amérault is quite nice, but also quite popular so can get crowded. If you go to www.google.fr and type in La Flotte Plage images, there are lots of pictures.

BOX, that's a really tall order. Ile de Ré real estate is some of the priciest in France. I was there last fall and happened upon some real estate brochures (albeit upscale ones), and 1-bedroom apartments were starting at 800,000 euros! You might look at some of the many campgrounds - not sure, but if they are like many French campgrounds there may be small cottages.

BOXtheFOX As a suggestion, travel with friends & split the cost of renting a 2 bedroomed village house or apartment to reduce the cost. We have rented a couple of times using Bon Sejour En France and have been very pleased with the accommodation.
