Where to Stay in Naxos

I'm going to Naxos in September and haven't really gotten a handle on where to stay yet. What part of the island is the best for having a fun and relaxing visit? We don't plan on going bar hopping too much but want to be in a location where it's easy to get around and have good meals (and relax!).

It looks like Naxos Town might make the most sense, but if anyone has another idea please let me know! Also specific places you recommend would be great!

What is your budget and for how long do you intend to stay ? When in September are you coming (the season slows down after the middle of September, which can affect where to stay) ?

A good choice apart from town will be St. George area - adjacent to town, and "everything" is within a 10-15 mins walking distance.

We're taking a ferry in from Mykonos on Sept 16 and leaving for Santorini on the 18th - so 2 nights! Is that middle enough do you think? We hope to spend less than $150 USD if possible and are open to staying in hotels or something like you would see on homeaway.com where it's a residence that the owner rents out.

Thanks for the tip on St. George I will look there as well... We love to walk and be outdoors so a 15 minute walk won't be a huge deal. And we were thinking of renting a car that Saturday so we can see the whole island.

I've heard that some people either talk to a travel agent in Greece to get hotels in Naxos or just wait until they get there and hotel people station themselves at the port with signs of hotels. That sounds kind of iffy though...

It is possible to wait until you are there and pick your choice from the hotel owners waiting for the ferries, but if you like a specific standard and location you should book beforehand.

Look up the St. George options - from the middle of September beach and hotel resorts further away will start closing for the season.

BTW: The middle of September is the best time to go. It is still warm, the sea is still nice and the big hords are gone.

When on Naxos, we always stayed at Hotel Grotta, a short walk from Naoussa town. If we were to return, it would be our hotel of choice.

We usually stay at Hotel Asteria on St George Beach. Lovely views, nice people. Should be in your budget that time of year.

Oops, yes, also stayed on Paros, at Naoussa, at Hotel Kalypso, but on Naxos, in Naxos Town, Chora, at Grotta. Love to be heading back.
