any excursions on andros

Planning next years holiday and think Andros sounds ideal. We like to spend most of our days on the beach but was wondering if there are any boat trips, jeep excursions etc. We are not 'into' historic places of interest but would hope there are some things to do if we fancy a day away from the beach. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi there;

We've been to Andros about 10 times now, staying in Batsi, where I presume you'll be staying. There's very little in the way of organised trips or other activities - the island is mainly used by the Greeks and there is very little foreign tourism so the place is just not set up for that kind of holiday. You can hire a jeep, certainly, or get a boat from Batsi to an adjoining beach (in the high season), but otherwise it really is a do-it-yourself kind of place - very laid back. The island is, however, ideal for walking - there are a number of waymarked paths - and there are walks organised by an English woman if you go to http://www.androsnetcenter.gr/ or Google something like andros walking you might be able to track her down.

Buses go from Batsi to the main town, which is charming. The Modern Art Museum and the Archaeological Museum are well worth visiting, but note that the siesta is strictly observed and the whole place closes in the afternoons! In the evening in Batsi is the promenade, when everybody walks up and down before diner; there’s also an open-air cinema.

We live in Lancaster - are you nearby? We've a couple of books and guides that might be of use. If you want any further info on batsi please don't hesitate to contact me.
