A day trip to Ischia on our own/excursion??

Hi

Is it possible to do a day trip to Ischia ourselves or do we need to do an excursion? We are not sure what the distance between the port to the castle and also the Mortella Gardens, are they close at hand (within walking distance)? Is there anything else we should try to fit in? Thanks for your help!

Although I think it may be possible to visit the Castle and the Gardens on a single day trip I dont think it would be too easy. I have only been on the organised trip using Goldentours and although this trip gives you quite a interesting run around the island and certainly gives yiou plenty of time at the Gardens you do not go anywhere near the Castle. One annoying feature of the coach trip is that you spend an hour at a lunch stop which has nothing to offer .

The Castle is in walking distance of the ferry so no problem there but the Gardens are some distance away which means a bus or taxi. You do not have a lot of time because the ferry does not get there probably much before 11 and you leave fairly early. One way would be to visit the Castle first, there is a bus going from the ferry and then taking a taxi to the Gardens, returning to the ferry by bus or taxi. It would make a worthwhile combination if you were prepared to pay and not much more than the coach trip. Be aware that the Gardens are only open on Tues, Thurs, Sat, and Sundays.

Hello, let us know at what time you could be in ischia, by the way in 5-6 hours you can easily visit both, castle and mortella garden, cause the first is two km from the port and for the second you just need a bus or a taxi. If you have more time you can also go for swimming and lunch...

Hi,

We went to Ischia at Easter time and couldn't book a tour so went over on the ferry. It was a hot, sunny day and we walked to The Aragonese Castle. It took about twenty minutes on the flat, so easy walking. This castle is enormous with loads to see and stunning views. We had lunch there and got totally carried away.

We had intended on going to The Botanical Gardens but did not have enough time. Walked back to the port, exploring along the way.

I am not sorry that we spent so much time in the castle as we saw so much and had the most relaxing time. We were unsure of public buses, and taxis were unbelievably expensive. (One taxi driver offered to transport us around the island on a two hour trip for eighty euros! We would have seen even less.)

Go alone and concentrate on one or two areas, or book a tour and have a taste of more. Six hours is not long!! Whatever you do, sail over to this beautiful island.

In six hours you'd be able to visit both, castle and garden by yourself, just have a look to the clock and if you will need it, use a taxi...

You cannot walk from the Castle to the Gardens , quite a distance, two buses or taxi. Bus or taxi back to ferry from the Gardens.

Thanks for all the information. I found the golden tour that mentioned above. We will join the tour to explore the island in a relax way. ;)
