help for a first time visitor

I have a trip coming this Oct to Italy, first time! I am flying into Venice and plan to stay in the city for 2 nights. From there I am heading to Florence city center for 2 nights. From there I am looking to do 3 nights in Tuscany rural area. I love the idea of staying in a farm house and traveling around to different wineries and visiting places to eat. Since I don't have a good grasp on Italy yet I want to make sure where I am staying is close enough to get around to different places. Right now I am looking at a place that is close to Greve in Chianti region. Any good day trip recommendations as well as places for dinner? Any suggestions about the route are appreciated. We are leaving that area to do 3 nights in Rome before we close the trip. Thank you!!!

Have a good look at the Greve website and its blog - there are several routes described there, especially the castles routes:

There are several restaurants in Greve, all much the same in price and quality. For really good pizza (and other dishes), try La Cantina, 5 minutes away from the main piazza.

Also consult the clickable map on chianti.info - almost all the sights near Greve are marked on it. Volterra would be a great day trip.

Thank you for your advice! Do you know how far from montepulciano we would be? I'd love a day trip there!

Montepulciano and places nearby is a good day trip from Greve. The drive without stopping takes about an hour and a half, but there are very nice places to stop off at en route.
