Getting to & from different walks, based in Canico

We are staying in Canico & want to do different walks, we are not hiring a car, I know there are zillions of guided walks/tours but prefer to do it our self. How easy is it to get to & from the most popular walks by public transport from Canico de Baixo.

You will find it very difficult for a couple of reasons, the buses may not go near the start/finish and not all walks are circular, so if you take too long you may be stuck for returning, especially if you are not completely sure where you are. Some walks are closed in parts because of rock falls and lack of maintenance, so if you go it alone you can become stuck and you may not be aware of these problems when you set out. if you don't consult a walking company. I would advise going to see a walking company and asking for advise on which to walk unguided. Check these sites

Although there are some easy flat walks, many are precipitas, narrow, wet and dangerous and if you read other posts on this subject you will see that it is not a good idea to go it alone. Many people have been injured and some lost their lives going it alone. Some, unfortunately, have also been mugged (thankfully very few) but it is a possibility. There have been cases where the bomberios cannot reach injured people partly because they are not sure where they are and partly because many of the paths are inaccessible. Walking in Madeira is fabulous and a great way to enjoy the Island, but it is like no where else in the world, the terraine can be difficult, you can be in cloud. The Sunflower books are good with advise where to go and the difficulty of each walk, but be very carefull if you insist going it alone, it is not reccommended, unless you have walked Madeira before, take cellphone loaded with emergency number, water and inform your reception of the time which you expect to return. I really hope you enjoy Madeira but be sure to be safe whatever you do.

There's a frequent bus (155) into Funchal, timetable here, eacl.pt/en/… where you can pick up buses to destinations all around the island: the Sunflower guide that Flowercity refers to has good information on which buses are needed for which walks, although the timetables are worth re-checking on the web or when you are on the island.

From Canico I have taken a taxi to Camacha and walked back along the Levada do Canico to Assomada (it's in the Sunflower guide), then on the roads back to Canico. The walk from Canico into Funchal is interesting in part (some good views coming in to the east of the city) but there's also some stretches along busy roads with no pavements... safer to get off the bus as it enters Funchal.
