It would be difficult to get around without a car, however the Lake Wright location is convenient to I64, I264 and other major roads so driving to & from places will be relatively easy. As far as things to do, consider Botanical Gardens, Va Beach resort area very nice boardwalk for walking and bike riding (rent bikes), First Landing State Park for nice trails or picnic, MacArthur Mall Downtown Norfolk, If the girls are into American Girl dolls, there is a museum in Downtown Norfolk, Hunter House, that has AG events, and your hotel has an adjacent golf course. Everything I mentioned is 30 minutes or less from Lake Wright. Let us know if you have specific interests, need directions, or have other questions. Enjoy the area.
I have done a little research and I think I would like to see the waterfront area of Norfolk and Portsmouth but I have heard the parking is very limited and expensive. I was considering driving to Portsmouth and parking near the ferry and trying to do a walking tour of both cities. Is this feasible? What can you tell me about where to park in either Norfolk or Portsmouth? Thank you.
Parking in Downtown Norfolk is not difficult, there are plenty of public lots and garages. For visiting the Downtown Waterfront, I would suggest parking at the Waterside garage (http://www.norfolk.gov/Parking/Garages.asp), take the pedestrain walkway to the waterfront, walk to Nauticus and USS Wisconsin and continue a couple more blocks and enjoy the cobblestone streets and old homes in the Freemason Historic District. Return to the Waterside area and take the ferry to Portsmouth, walk around the Downtown area. You could also park at the garage across from Nauticus. Check out the parking map at this site, http://www.norfolk.gov/Parking/Map.asp, it shows parking garages in relationship to attractions.
Hope this helps.
