Suggested Family Activities - August 1st through 8th

Our family will be in Norfolk from August 1st through 8th, as my son is scheduled to participate in the AAU Track & Field Junior Olympics. We will have our car. I am looking for two types of suggestions related to family vacation activities. First are suggested activities within (or very close to) Norfolk for days when my son has 1 or 2 events. Second are suggested day trip activities up to 2 to 3 hours outside of Norfolk. We will be traveling on a tight budget, so suggestions with nominal entrance fees or costs would be appreciated. Thanks.

Here are a few ideas to consider (some suggestions may/may not be good depending on ages of child/children:

Norfolk or close.........

Virginia Zoo http://www.virginiazoo.org/

Take the ferry from downtown Norfolk to downtown Portsmouth, very cheap, nice excursion and sights along the waterfront www.virginia.org/site/description.asp…

Norfolk Botanical Gardens http://www.norfolkbotanicalgarden.org/home

Downtown Norfolk tour the USS Wisconsin (free) and Nauticus next door (fee)

Chrysler Museum Downtown Norfolk (wonderful!) currently free admission to main museum, special exhibits may have a fee http://www.chrysler.org/

2-3 hours From Norfolk

Va Beach Oceanfront about 30 minutes (avoid rush hours), pay to park but the sand and ocean are free, lots of beach resort type shops, restaurants, ice cream, rent bikes and cruise the boardwalk or just walk it for free

Va Beach First Landing State Park, wonderful trails, scenic, nice area for picnic lunch, cheap, www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/fir.shtml

Newport News/Hampton Mariners Museum, Va Living Museum, Newport News Park, lots more

Yorktown, Jamestown, Williamsburg known as Historic Triangle, if you may not be in the area again, don't miss it, unique and beautiful historical locations

When travelling in the area always avoid rush hours, don't travel to Newport News or Williamsburg areas on Friday, traffic is worse than normal Stop by AAA and pick up brochures for the area for more ideas. There is lots to see and do, if you have particular interests let us know.

Enjoy your time in the area.
