River trips in reverse?

We'd like to spend a day or two on the Douro in late May/early June, but without having to drive our hire car into Porto. Is it possible to do a combination of riverboat and train, but starting from Pinhao, or even Regua in a pinch (ideally boat down to Porto overnight, then train back up river the next day)?

Many thanks for any suggestions!

It doesn't exist but you may want to have a look at the following link: www.douroacima.pt/programas_barcos_E.htm

and use their contact option to ask.

For anyone to really answer your question, and provide other alternatives just as good or better, tell us more about where you have been before on this trip. I am quite familiar with the area, often staying at the CS Vintage House (which is fantastic if you can afford it) and with a car too. If you are scared to drive into Porto itself in a car. I would recommend some place north of Porto, but on their fantastic system of light rail trains that go quite a distance into the northern area.

We've never been to Portugal before, but will be travelling by rental car in a loop from friends in Asturias (in Spain), through Galicia, down towards other friends near Coimbra and then back via Salamanca. As we already live in a big city, I was looking for more rural adventures during this holiday and so am now considering a stay near Pinhao or Regua, but still hoping to enjoy the river by train and boat. (For the record, money's not the object, although the CS Vintage does seem a bit too refined for our taste.)

We'd also prefer local bars and cafes within walking distance in the evening (and not too early a start for day trips). There seems to be a good train service (five a day) between Regua/Pinhao/Pocinho, but am concerned about how to guarantee a one-way boat trip might be available without booking in advance.

Alternatively, we wouldn't mind staying overnight ON a boat, as long as a train trip on the Upper Douro could somehow be included.

Most grateful for any suggestions

Have now reserved at a hotel in Pinhao, with the idea of combining train and/or boat trips in a loop up to Pocinho and down to Regua on 1 June. Any advice on boat schedules to/from Pinhao?

@FTHW: Many thanks for the link. Have you ever booked anything through that website (am wondering how secure it might be)? There is a tempting afternoon boat trip from Regua to Pinhao @ Euro 30 each (and we could then just forget the train return).

You appear to be in the Algarve, but presume you've actually visited the Upper Douro? Could you recommend a quinta to visit near Pinhao, in the afternoon or early evening?

The website is secure and they communicate well answering questions.

I have visited the Douro region and it remains on my 'to do' list. It's a region to come back to many times. I have not visited a quinta near Pinhao but found this one interesting: tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g580264-d1…

If you have time, see if you can take the train to Pocinho and back. No need to stay there, since there's nothing going on but the train journey is very much worth it.

The train track goes right along the river.

Not sure what that FOL's problems are, but as the OP I've been very grateful for FTHW's advice. Have been in touch with Rota do Douro re: boats from Regua to Pinhao on 1 June and hope to reserve a place on the 16.45 trip upriver (2 hours @ 28 Euro pp). (Hopefully preceded by a train trip from Pinhao up to Pocinho and then back to Regua....)
